Dick's Sporting Goods halts sales of assault-style weapons
More power to them but it seems, to me, idiotic for a sporting goods store to alienate/piss-off a large portion of their business.
Getting free mass media mention of your business (aka advertising?) is quite valuable. Not selling a few models of guns (at a subsidiary?) is peanuts.

I believe the tide is finally turning. Gun rights at all costs is going by the wayside. The NRA and it's ardent followers are on the wrong side of history.

Wal-Mart did the same thing.
It isn't idiotitc, it is common sense and a move that even greedy wal-street approves of.
I guess we will see if the anti gun hysterics make up the losses from those of us who won't shop at Dick's any more

Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, will stop selling assault-style weapons like the one used in the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting.
The company said it will also raise the minimum age for all gun sales to 21. Dick's (DKS) will not sell high-capacity magazines that allow shooters to fire far more rounds than traditional weapons without reloading, as well as other accessories used with weapons similar to the AR-15.
....
We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens," he said in a letter released Wednesday. "But we have to help solve the problem that's in front of us."
Stack, 63, is the son of the chain's father. He has been CEO for 34 years.
The company said it has never sold bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire as if they are automatic weapons. Stack called for a nationwide ban on such items.
He also urged Congress to sign into law the restrictions his company has put in place, along with tougher background checks on all gun sales.
"Some will say these steps can't guarantee tragedies like Parkland will never happen again. They may be correct -- but if common sense reform is enacted and even one life is saved, it will have been worth it," he said in the letter.

This is an action that signals "we're getting out of the gun business", not that I ever knew anyone who bought one from there. Every other store is cheaper.

1. There's more Dems than Republicans, more liberals than conservatives...and it seems to me that if Dick's wants to attract a larger share of the population by using free advertising, this is a great way to do it. This is what conservatives used to call the free market at work.
2. Is it somehow now a constitutional requirement that a sporting good store ALSO sell assault-style weapons?
3. And could it be that maybe, just maybe the CEO of Dick's has realized that FAR more innocent lives are taken by assault-style weapons than are saved in self-defense by assault-style weapons...and maybe he looked at his grandkids and realized that their lives are worth far more than his profits.
If I was a bettin man, Id wager they probably do an OK business on shotguns and sell a decent amount of guns during Christmas time to family members shopping for gifts. Their prices on their 10/22s were about $40 higher than some of the other places out here and thats all Ive ever looked at them for. What Dicks DOES do well with is clothing...sporting goods apparel. Thats about 80% of their store out here. This is an action that signals "we're getting out of the gun business", not that I ever knew anyone who bought one from there. Every other store is cheaper.
Re: #3. Far most children's lives have been lost in car/bicycle accidents than in mass shootings with an "assault weapons". This isn't about lives. Dick's hasn't sold AR-15s in the more than 600 Dick's brand stores since 2015. This only affects the 37 Field & Stream brand stores. Dick's will still sell you a 1000 rounds of AR ammo. If they were concerned about lives, they stop selling guns and ammo entirely.
Oh, wait, they just did that.
1. They did not just stop selling guns and ammo entirely - please get your facts straight. They stopped selling assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, and they no longer sell firearms to those under the age of 21.
2. This may come as a shock to you, but bicycles are not designed to kill human beings. Assault-style weapons are. You - and the others here who try to use the same tired old excuse - need to remember that that's a clear violation of a logical fallacy. Your excuse is no different from saying that we should be able to legally purchase self-propelled artillery because cigarettes have killed far more people than self-propelled artillery has.

It's kind of ironic that the first people to take sensible action to save lives are Dicks.
