This guy is just disgusting!

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will sign an executive order to issue emergency rules for "protecting the rights of parents," making face masks optional across the state in schools and leaving it up to parents...
It says, among other things, that Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran "shall pursue all legal means available to ensure school districts adhere to Florida law, including ... withholding state funds from noncompliant school boards...."

This directive from DeSantis was issued today, AFTER the breaking news from the CDC that Delta is as contagious as chickenpox and is being spread by both vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. The CDC has recommended all students and staff in K-12 schools mask, regardless of where. DeSantis says pfffft.

He's talking about Florida's children. If I had a child in school in Florida right now, I'd be looking into homeschooling. In light of what we've just learned, I sure wouldn't be risking my kids for some Freedumb loving parents in my community.

If there's any consolation, I can just imagine the Lincoln Project's campaign ads in '22 about him. It will be pages of graphs of Covid spiking, interspersed with all his Freedumb orders re: Covid. This man is no leader. No concern for his people's lives, just the votes of those he can impress.

Same in Arizona. It's against the law here to implement any PPP or mandates to protect people from Covid. You can't even quarantine a kid who tested positive or trace him in school. Against his rights.

We're dead this fall.

We have the same law in Arkansas.

It's nice to live in one of the sane parts of the country.

What makes me sad is that he and others who support his nonsense keep prattling that healthy kids don't get covid and if they do they don't get as sick which totally ignores that we have a whole lot of kids in this country who are not healthy -- almost 19% (approx 14 million) 0-17 yrs of age were reported to have special health care needs in 2016-17.

A year ago asymptomatic children in Florida who tested positive were found to have lasting pulmonary damage...
"They are seeing there is damage to the lungs in these asymptomatic children. ... We don’t know how that is going to manifest a year from now or two years from now,” Alonso said. “Is that child going to have chronic pulmonary problems or not?”

That was then. Since then cardiac problems have been found in asymptomatic people, including incredibly fit professional hockey players...

Long-term effects in asymptomatic kids is starting to be alarming.

"Case studies also show MIS-C can strike seemingly healthy children without warning three or four weeks after asymptomatic infections, said Alvaro Moreira, MD, MSc, of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Moreira, a neonatologist, is an assistant professor of pediatrics in the university's Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine."

"According to the literature, children did not need to exhibit the classic upper respiratory symptoms of COVID-19 to develop MIS-C, which is frightening," Dr. Moreira said. "Children might have no symptoms, no one knew they had the disease, and a few weeks later, they may develop this exaggerated inflammation in the body."

There's a special place in hell reserved for politicians cynical enough to toss kids under the bus to push their agenda.

Incredibly healthy professional athletes get lasting cardio problems from Covid.

But the go on the 'survive' side of the ledger and fuel the minimizer idiots.

Its a ****ing mask, people...come on with this bullshit. While I believe in the vaccine, I'm not necessarily all about the government being able to force them into arms, but I am wholly in favor of them being able to tell people to wear a mask in public.

DeSantis is a moron and a monster. Worst part about it is that being that I am neither of those things, I actually have to hope that his stupidity doesn't come back to bite the citizens of Florida in the ass.

DeSantis is a mini Trump; he's angling for Trumps followers. As a Gov, he's running a business; but without getting info from the people that specialize in certain fields. This time it's the medical profession; he's not qualified to make decisions in that area. It's the same thing that Trump did; along with the doubling down when he was wrong.

Hey, it worked for Trump the loser to some extent; I can only hope that most folks recognize this fallacy.

He seems to be horrible enough for the Republican nomination that he's going for.

Helix, here you are. I asked in another thread, do you know if they're working on a Delta vaccine? Is that possible?

How about this, if you want to wear a mask you can wear one. If you want to make your kid wear a mask, I feel sorry for them but ultimately that's up to you. Just leave the rest of our kids alone.

I feel sorry for the kids, too, and the staff who have to work and teach all day wearing one. But kids under 12 can't be protected at all from a virus which is the most contagious virus researchers have ever seen. Since masks slow transmission, it only makes sense to mask them all.

Kids under 12 are at virtually zero risk from Covid. They don't need protection.

If you are really concerned about the kids health, it seems to make more sense to just keep the schools closed.

They can carry it, especially this new, improved version. CDC:
Similar to adults with SARS-CoV-2 infections, children and adolescents can spread SARS-CoV-2 to others when they do not have symptoms or have mild, non-specific symptoms and thus might not know that they are infected and infectious. Children are less likely to develop severe illness or die from COVID-19.Jul 9, 2021

8.5% of cases are in kids under 18, with few deaths. That's not zero risk. It's 8 or 9 kids out of a hundred, not quite one in ten. 1 in 10 is not zero risk. I'm talking about transmission here. It will feed community spread like crazy and as case numbers climb, so will bad outcomes for the unlucky ones who get really sick or have lingering complications. (See Grand Mal's post above.)

As a teacher who lived through that remote learning nightmare, my hope would be no more of that.

Do you have a link to the data/science on which the CDC is relying when they are recommending kids need to be masked?

Schools should exist for the benefit of their students, not for the benefit of unspecified others. What matters is that the chances of kids actually being harmed by Covid are extremely low. And young children are much less likely to be asymptomatic spreaders anyway.

From the CDC page on school guidance. Hope this helps.

What we are learning about Delta and its transmissibility argues against your conclusion that they are much less likely to be asymptomatic spreaders. That's what they said about the vaccinated until yesterday, remember?
