Democrats are pushing for a 'discharge resolution' for a clean increase of the debt ceiling. They need five Republicans to agree to the clean increase, instead of the bill calling for trillions in cuts Republicans passed. Republicans are threatening to recklessly blow up the economy hoping Democrats get the blame.

I'm afraid this may be an example of an unstoppable force meeting an unmovable object.

Democrats can't give in to blackmail, and Republicans are now so radicalized that raising the debt ceiling without extracting ridiculous concessions isn't an option.

Buckle in.

Take a deep breath. It will be OK.

Returning spending to levels from four months ago will not "blow up the economy" Do you ever even think about the bullshit they tell you regurgitate?

Republicans will get saddled with the blame for this standoff because they're demanding things the public isn't behind. That's why Republicans always lose on the debt ceiling fight.

"Let us set this box of golden retriever puppies on fire OR WE'LL REFUSE TO RAISE THE DEBT CEILING."

Yeah, that's gonna go over great with the public.

Republicans calling for $Trillions in spending cuts? How dare they try to balance the federal budget!

God, you make it sound so simple. Maybe that's because it is. (y)

That's because it's simple. National support for various issues isn't on Republicans' minds, but every standoff between the House and the Executive is a national spectacle, and therefore what the Republican is attempting to extort is a national issue, which they will always lose seeing as there's next to nothing that the majority of the people actually support them on.

Whether it's a Democratic President and a Republican House, or a Republican President and a Democratic House, the Republicans lose every time.

Funny thing that Democratic spending.... When you add it, it hardly does anything... but when you take it away, it's the end of the world.

The Democrats are the ones sabotaging the country.

They control the lying narrative.

All Republicans are trying to do is return the budget to 2022 levels. Democrats are trying to make the extra COVID spending a permanent expenditure. We can not afford to keep spending like a drunken sailor in a foreign port.

Will this pass?

Or is it political theater that serves no purpose other than feeding their base?

No, it's not a funny thing. And it does plenty.

Sounds like that old Vietnam mantra: "in order to save the village (economy) we had to destroy it".

Unfortunately the system works in such a way that Mr. Biden is going to have to deal with the House Speaker. They don't have to pass his ridiculous spending, Trillions of new spending under Joe. Biden's BS is so thick, he's promised he could work with the other side, he could breing the nation together, and yet it's all more F'd now than it ever was under Trump. As bad as the left says Trump was, they will defend the doddering old fool Biden who has made a mess of the nation, both national and international affairs.

Well, that's false. And we have a budget negotiation process for that. Maybe Democrats should have used it to extort from Republicans under trump, when they raised it three times.

There will be some compromise coming. Some cuts in exchange for raising the ceiling. At least that's how adults would handle this.
Biden has repeatedly said he won't compromise on this issue.

Are you suggesting that he lied, and will fold to Republican demands?

No, it's not. Adults handle it by not allowing the debt ceiling to be used to extort and telling Republicans raise it, or you own the crash.

You gotta admit they choose suspicious times to get all fiscally responsible. Where was all this concern and responsibility when they raised the debt limit 3 times under Trump, increasing the deficit $7.5 trillion, without even raising an eyebrow? I don't even remembering hearing about it. NOW all of a sudden they are all responsible?

Come on, be serious. This is not about fiscal responsibility.

That's actually not how the adults would handle it because that would be giving in to blackmail. Or extortion. I think I may need to look into the exact difference between the two.

Republicans are attempting to set the stage for 2024 elections by creating the worst situation they can so they can blame it on Biden.

There's no other reason why they would choose the cuts they want to make so they can roll out campaigns that Biden took their Medicare and Snap benefits away and/or crashed the economy because he refused to compromise. They put him in a corner and the only thing he can do is say no.

If they were serious, they'd be asking for more border security or for federal legislation of background checks--something their own voters would sing their praises for.

So it is just theater, but Biden is too savvy for that and I think McCarthy is out of his league. You can't put MTG on your team and expect to win anything but stupid prizes.

I think the majority of Republicans would be willing to cut a deal to stave off insanity. The problem is, that might not be enough. McCarthy made a little deal with the devil to become the nominal Speaker back in January, which we all should have bookmarked, as this could come back to the fore in the coming weeks.

Wrong. The bill capped discretionary spending to the FY2022 level.

The bill would cut a wide swath of government spending to last year's levels,…

The bill would set federal discretionary spending at $1.47 trillion during the next fiscal year and allow it to increase only 1% annually from there, far below the rate of inflation in most years.

The cap on spending is the big-ticket item in the bill, accounting for about two-thirds of the $4.8 trillion in deficit reduction that the Congressional Budget Office says would occur over 10 years if the bill is enacted.

Discretionary spending includes things like weapons programs, servicemember pay, grants for schools that serve large shares of low-income students, rental assistance to house millions of poor and disabled, and money to fund research on cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It's the spending that Congress approves through appropriations bills.

The House GOP bill doesn't affect spending on Social Security and Medicare. Such spending, referred to as mandatory, accounts for about two-thirds of all federal spending.

Democrats are lying about the bill saying that Republicans want to cut Medicare and Social Security. That is not being cut.
