A couple of months away from the midterms things are looking great for Democrats. A blue wave is building momentum. Two books exposing Trump's incompetence and an op-ed from an insider are the talk of the town. Liberals are energized and conservatives aren't enthusiastic about supporting this disaster of a president.

What do Democrats decide to do as Trump is drowning in bad press? Change the topic of course!

Now the topic is Brett Kavanaugh and not the disastrous Trump presidency detailed in two new books and an op-ed.

Now conservatives are energized because they're fighting for a conservative SC nominee.

Just over a month away from critical elections across the country, the wide Democratic enthusiasm advantage that has defined the 2018 campaign up to this point has disappeared, according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

Democrats suck at politics. They had Trump on the ropes drowning in bad press and they decide to change the subject.
 
Trump is president. That's pretty much all the proof we need to support your thesis.

It took some mighty suckage to let that happen.
 


Suggesting that this Kavanaugh confirmation clusterflock is some brilliant calculated master-plan concocted by Donald Trump is a little ridiculous.

The Kavanaugh mess happened all on its own. The Democrats have been key players in extending/sensationalizing it.


And the Democrats are still heavy favorites to reclaim the HoR in November. (The Senate will be a little tougher nut to crack.)

There is a lot of truth to that.

I said Trump used the controversy which the Democrats created to his advantage.

I said this weeks a go, just stamp your feet and let Kav go through. Use it to rally the vote because if not Kav it will be another wingnut. Every talking head and every DEm poster disagreed.

Be happy, you have further empowered Trump.

I disagree. You need speak plainly about Trump and his brood.

People naturally will rise up against evil. Being politically correct enables the dark forces by not mobilizing opposition.
 

One of the biggest reasons Trump was elected president was because of an open seat on the SC.
 

Not sure I agree with the above. Feinstein/Schumer threw their hail mary when it was clear he would get in and base was in danger of losing enthusiasm. Had they been able to sick to the one allegation they may have won. When others put out their dubious claims it hurt everything including Ford. Thus the ensuing riling up of the conservative base. If they somehow still pullout a victory hear good chance they sweep the house and senate. Worse case they win the house, which means Trump is a lame duck who will have to duck investigations the next two years.

Best case IMO would be to weaken Trump with independents but keep him in office so he can be defeated in 2020.

Worst case,knock him out and get a main stream republican like Kasich to run against "Spartacus" Booker.

Yes. You have to pick your battles. Trump was drowning in bad press. Everyone was talking about the op-ed and Woodwards' book until Dems changed the subject to this SC nomination.

1. Even if you defeat Kavanaugh, Trump picks another hardcore conservative.

2. The whole issue regarding presidential immunity from prosecution is not important because Kavanaugh is just one vote. He needs the other conservatives to vote with him. And if all conservatives agree on this issue then it doesn't matter if it's Kavanaugh or some other conservative Trump nominates.

Moreover, Dems should be focused on how Trump increased the deficit to give tax breaks to himself and his rich buddies. You can campaign on that. The deficit increase will resonate even with conservative voters.
 
Is that really a tiny hint of introspection I'm seeing? Is the "all self-righteousness all the time" program developing a crack or two?

Interesting. Let's see how this plays out. In particular, let's see how it plays out with Harris and Booker because those two are the ones the Democrats want out in front....unless Flake flips parties and decides to run.

If they had let a nominee with a credible sexual assault allegation sail through so as to not risk upsetting anyone, the complaint would be that they never fight for anything and stand for nothing. And that would be a valid gripe! The role of the Judiciary Committee is to take these things seriously.

As near as I can tell, Dem candidates around the country are running on a whole slew of issues, not least of which are the GOP's attacks on pre-existing condition protections and their tax giveaways to the wealthy. The workings of the Senate Judiciary Committee have not changed that.
 

Meh, this was always going to happen imo.

If it wasn't this, it would have been something else. Black players taking a knee, Black lives matter. A muslim breaking the law. A Latino gang member killing someone. A women accusing someone white and powerful of rape somewhere.


Somewhere there would have been someone with brown skin, or a woman, who Trump could attack and thus energize the base. It is what it is. Plus, you can expect Putin to step in and help his lapdog, so I expect the Trump base to get further energized through social media and other sources in the coming weeks.

No, this is simply about being smart enough not to change a news cycle that is hurting your opponent.

Before all this Kavanaugh talk, everyone was trying to figure out who wrote the op-ed claiming Trump was incompetent and needed papers removed from his desk.

It was always known that a lot of conservatives who don't like Trump voted for him because of SC nominees. Trump promised to pick hardcore conservatives and Hillary would certainly pick liberals. So, they picked Trump.

Now in the midterms, the last thing you want to do is make this about SC nominees.
 

Your wishful thinking will not erase the 6% lead the Dems have on the generic ballot. But please, keep hope alive.

I understand the principle, but if it serves to fire up the reactionary base, it may just end up hurting the Democrats who may have a shot a red state seats. Is it about winning or describing Trump supporters in colorful terms?

Meh, the Republican base was already as enthused as it could have been in 2016. The problem was the lack of enthusiasm among Democrats and independents. Kavanaugh should not be confirmed. While it is likely true that Republicans forcing Kavanaugh through before the election might benefit Democrats it doesn't benefit the country, and unlike Republicans, Democrats are interested in what's in the best interest of the country not just their party.
 

That may be so, but there's no need to make it easy for him and hand him the issue he needs.
