Democrats Should STOP Talking About "Tariffs"

No. Not because they are supposedly working - they aren't.

But because the word doesn't get to the core of what they are.

Democrats need to stop using the word "tariff" and starting saying "IMPORT TAX".

People respond to taxation. Taxes. Taxes.

Trump is raising taxes. He LIED.

What does that accomplish? How is calling tariffs "IMPORT TAX" helpful?

Not really. Trump promised that he wouldn't raise INCOME taxes, which are DIRECT taxes. Tariffs are not Direct taxes - they are INdirect taxes.

It's important to make the distinction between Direct taxes (which are paid directly to the government and cannot be avoided) and INdirect taxes (which are NOT paid directly to government, and can be avoided).

This reminds me of the time the left found out that "liberal" was a bad word so they changed it to "progressive". It didn't matter because they were still identified as the left.

Even if you insist on calling tariffs a tax, you are still wrong for opposing tariffs.

Tariffs are paid directly to the federal government. Where did you think they're paid?

Import tariffs are an import tax. Export tariffs are an export tax.

I try to use the word "tax" as often as I can to describe tariffs...but I am not a Democrat, just a free trade supporter!

Because most people don't know what a tariff is but they do know what a tax is. Of course, the idiotic democrats never thought of this strategy.

You don't understand the differences between Direct taxes and Indirect taxes. Unless you are able to make the distinction between the two, no answer I offer will make any sense to you.

Research Direct taxes, and Indirect taxes, and learn about how they are paid and collected.

Tariffs are Indirect taxes, and they can be passed on to the consumer. One cannot pass on Direct taxes to a third party.

It's what they are, so it's kind of like calling the sun a star. Look up the definition of tariff if you're still confused.
 
At least you’re acknowledging that Traitor Trump’s tariffs are actually taxes paid by Americans.

I tend to agree, just does not solve very much.

The better way for Democrats to go at this is tell everyone Trump's real goal, implement regressive policies that benefit the wealthy and punish the most economically vulnerable.

Because it speaks to Trump's stated goals, lessen the burden on the wealthy and pass down costs to the consumer.


Trump Defense Syndrome, I agree about the distinction on taxes but disagree with you on intent. Trump like regressive policies that place more burden on the lower income quintiles.
 

Call them what they are: a consumption tax. American consumers spend money on imports, they get taxed. They get taxed even on American-made products because a lot of production requires foreign inputs. Americans couldn't be this wealthy collectively (even if unevenly) if we didn't have easy access to the world's resources (a situation that's going to change over time, and not necessarily in our favor).
 
I call them regressive Republican consumer taxes, among other things.

Excellent idea. Let’s call things what they are.

Inflation? A hidden tax on your wages and savings.

The employer "paying half" of fica? That's a bullshit lie - you pay all of it in the form of lower wages.

Regulation? The costs don't vanish - they get baked into the price of everything you buy. That's another hidden tax, but progressives luv to pretend it doesn’t exist.
 
It's actually a corporate tax. And worse because the importer pays it regardless of its financial condition where as a corporate tax depends on the profit of the company. A good thing the malignant narcissist scumbag piece of shit liar grifter rapist seditionist felon serial adulterer and tax cheat and pedophile lowered corporate tax rates.

Direct taxes DIRECTLY affect your paycheck because the government takes (a portion of) your earnings. You have no choice with Direct taxes.

With Tariffs (INdirect taxes), you have a choice. If you don't want to pay the import tariffs on a Toyota made in Japan, then you can buy a Toyota made in Texas. Or Virginia. Or Tennessee. Alternatively, you can buy a used Toyota that has already been tariffed. But you have choices.

Tariffs are indirect taxes that can be avoided by the end buyer (consumer).

If you don't want to pay import tariffs, then you can buy domestic.
