Canadians at US border

Perhaps this may come as a shock, but I totally support the US Government's crackdown on Canadians.

What I'm hearing is that more and more Canadians who usually spend the winter in a US State are deciding not to, which means they will likely stay here and maybe even tour some of the wilderness in their own back yard.

That creates jobs for Canadians.

Thank you Mr.Trump. Our economy is doing better than yours, as our number one export, oil, is selling in record volumes and tourism in country is up 23% . An....it's down an equal amount to Las Vegas and Seattle.

Yeah,Trump is good for OUR economy. The more he tries to set us back the higher the price we sell our oil for.
Way to destroy the environment.

I am the occasional libertarian who believes in strong border enforcement. And I see great utility in locking a person to a passport by fingerprints. If nothing else, that passport will never be used by an impostor because the prints will flag.

I didn't say it was.

Because you're... better than some Nigerian old fart who wants to stay for any length of time to do the same thing?

So, you now assume everyone who enters the US is a criminal and wants the US to treaty tourism is tanking h them as such?

You wonder why tourism has nosedived?

Mug shots and fingerprints.
A couple from Ladysmith, BC who travel by motorhome south for the winter were searched, fingerprinted and had mugshots taken, and charged $60 for the process.

For some reason this only applies if you cross at a land crossing, not if you arrive by air.
Kind of humiliating. Who knows, maybe they'll make other arrangements next winter.
Czechoslovakia during the cold war. I remember that they spent several hours going through our car while we had to stand off to the side and wait (or sit on the curb). They didn’t charge a formal fee, but you were required to exchange a certain amount of money for each day you planned to stay in the country. You received a receipt or a stamp that could be checked by the police or at hotels. You weren’t allowed to exchange any leftover money back. Maybe Trump could introduce something similar when the dollar crashes?

Tell that to the two million Canadian members of NEXUS.

Or the millions of non-Canadian aliens that enter every year.

Do you think Canadian snowbirds are stealing American jobs or something or that there is a ton of snowbird crime? Frankly you seem to want the US to be unwelcoming to people who stay for a couple of months, spend a ton of money and then leave of their own accord in the Spring. Frankly I think snowbirds would rather go to Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean than the US. If you want to light your tourism industry on fire, that's your choice, but I think it's stupid.

Know why that's just bullshit theatrics? All that stupid crap at the US Customs border office? Look...

That's a pic from my home town. The street on the right is in Surrey, BC and the one on the left is in Blaine, Washington. That little aluminium obelisk marks the border.
The USA can't even be bothered to build a fence, fergawdsake. That's how unimportant 'border security' is. All that posturing at the border crossing office is just theatre, a pretense meant to impress people. I could drive a pick-up loaded with whatever I want across there or hundreds of other places, just in BC alone. If I was serious I'd walk across at midnight and steal Washington license plates and be anywhere west of Colorado by morning.
'Border security enforcement'. That's a joke.

What a dumb ****ing way to read what I said. I never said everyone is a criminal. I said every alien from every other country besides Canada gets fingerprinted already.

You wonder why tourism has nosedived?
Arriving aliens have been fingerprinted at entry for twenty years. I doubt any current tourism variations are attributable to something that's been around as long as Taylor Swift's career.

"Spring. Frankly I think snowbirds would rather go to Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean than the US. I"

They are...

In droves!

Sections like this are surveilled. Heavily.

Remember?

I've already said this change is silly, so why do you think I "want" this at all?

Regardless, anyone else from any other country on Earth who wants to come, "spend a ton of money and then leave of their own accord" for any length of time whatsoever has had to submit to fingerprinting for twenty years. Maybe you can show me all your bitching and moaning about that before today? Or maybe you didn't care until it would've cost you ten minutes of your life to do it.

Okay and other countries will probably let snowbirds in for a long winter vacation without this requirement. Vacations are supposed to be fun, this doesn't sound fun and they can spend their money elsewhere. Your country seems scary and unwelcoming. If you want to destroy your tourism industry, that's your choice, but it's a stupid thing to do.

As the previous poster noted, better cross all of the European Union off your list if slapping your booger hooks on a glass plate for five seconds is such an imposition. Maybe you can ask any other country's citizens how they've managed to struggle through the inhumanity of the process for twenty years without flipping the **** out.

Yes, it's silly, but perhaps not as silly as the freakout over it.

Does Mexico or the Caribbean have these requirements? The US is not the only place in the Western hemisphere with nice weather in the winter. If visiting the US is a privilege, then the US having a tourism industry is a privilege too. Vacations are costly, why spend money on a vacation where the host country doesn't want you there?

Do you think the EU wants you there? You keep ignoring the most basic questions here. How do you think all the rest of the world manages to cope with this horrible requirement?

Why do you think you're so much better than every other person in the world?

I just mentioned Mexico and the Caribbean, why did you ignore those areas?

Why do you think you're so much better than every other person in the world?

Nothing, I just telling you what people want from a vacation and this ain't it.

Yeah, like Spain.

I just mentioned Mexico and the Caribbean, why did you ignore those areas?
Because I don't care about them. They aren't the issue. The issue is certain Canadians thinking they are so much better than any other country on Earth that they are entitled to be exempt from the same requirements as any other person coming to visit the US.

Nothing, I just telling you what people want from a vacation and this ain't it.
Like I've said, and you've repeatedly ignored, millions of aliens every year manage to tolerate this when they visit the US for any length of time. You think you're better than them, apparently, and special treatment like no visa requirement for the vast majority of admission classes, exemption from a requirement to apply for advance travel authorization like any other trusted country has to do, and exemption from colection of biometrics for trips under 30 days isn't good enough for you.

You want more. Because you're special.

Okay, well then maybe Canadians would rather vacation in Mexico or the Caribbean over the US next winter. I hope you enjoy losing thousands of tourism jobs.

Why should I want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars travelling to a country that treats me with suspicion?

You want more. Because you're special.

Does Canada finger print and search the motor homes of long-term visitors from the US?

I know not how many times it must be said before you reach comprehension on this point, but (for at least the third - fourth? - time) I think this change is silly.

Why should I want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars travelling to a country that treats me with suspicion?
ASK THE MILLIONS OF OTHER ALIENS WHO VISIT THE UNITED STATES EVERY YEAR WHO HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.

Does Canada finger print and search the motor homes of long-term visitors from the US?
No idea. If they do, or if they start, I promise I won't whine incessantly about it.

I know not how many times it must be said before you reach comprehension on this point, but (for at least the third - fourth? - time) I think this change is silly.

Then what's your point?
ASK THE MILLIONS OF OTHER ALIENS WHO VISIT THE UNITED STATES EVERY YEAR WHO HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.

Okay, still it's my vacation money and if I don't like this, I am not obligated to tolerate it when other countries are more welcoming. Same deal with any snowbird.

No idea. If they do, or if they start, I promise I won't whine incessantly about it.

Because if they don't do that, than Canadians are asking to be treated as we treat Americans, if we do finger print long term American visitors, then I will concede the argument to you.

Then what's your point?
Exactly what I've said before: this isn't a big deal, literally everyone else around the world has to do it, and even though the change is silly the histrionics over it are even sillier.

Okay, still it's my vacation money and if I don't like this, I am not obligated to tolerate it when other countries are more welcoming. Same deal with any snowbird.
Nobody said otherwise.

Because if they don't do that, than Canadians are asking to be treated as we treat Americans, if we do finger print long term American visitors, then I will concede the argument to you.
Well, we have to let your First Nations folk in no matter how many vile and violent crimes they've committed. Call it square.

Exactly what I've said before: this isn't a big deal, literally everyone else around the world has to do it, and even though the change is silly the histrionics over it are even sillier.

Again, if I don't spend money going to a country they are not welcome in, that's their choice. That's good financial decisions, not histrionics.

I am not traveling to the US while Trump tries to ruin our economy with tariffs, is that "histrionics" or deciding not to visit a country that is trying to harm our economy?

Nobody said otherwise.

Then destroy your tourism industry for no good reason, I can't stop your government from doing stupid things.
Well, we have to let your First Nations folk in no matter how many vile and violent crimes they've committed. Call it square.

Yeah, because they owned all the land the US and Canada are on, before it was stolen from them. These tribes moved around before the border existed.

That's a stupid reason to justify finger printing snowbirds.

No one should visit the US again. It's not a safe country for foreigners, not with this hostile government.

Well, we have to let your First Nations folk in no matter how many vile and violent crimes they've committed.
Well that's more than a little racist isn't it.

You're one step away from characterizing Indigenous people as "rapists and murderers".
