Dearborn Heights Police Department shares, rescinds multi-language patch on social media

The patch didn't last long after so much public backlash.

  • Dearborn Heights Police Department posted a design for a police badge option similar to its current design with the addition of Arabic translations for the English words.
  • The department deleted the post, and Mayor Bill Bazzi said the idea for a badge shouldn't have been presented as an official protype.
"The Dearborn Heights Police Department gained national attention after sharing a police patch design with the logo in both English and Arabic on its social media pages.

The patch design, similar to the department's current patch with additional Arabic translations below the English words, was posted on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

On Friday, Sept. 5, Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi said the design was a digital mock-up that hadn't been fully discussed by police department stakeholders, and the post was removed from the department's social media.

"The patch effort was an internal discussion among some within the police department, which was not put forth for consensus or further review," Bazzi said in a statement."

I don't see the issue. It's an optional patch, presumably for designated translators/liaisons for the Arab community. What's wrong with that?

Last time I checked this wasn't an Arab country, nor an Arab speaking country. You can't just give away your identity as a nation. If you don't want to come to America and become an American, don't come.

We aren’t an any ethnicity in particular country.


People in the US speak Arabic. Visitors to the US speak Arabic. American citizens speak Arabic.

At least Dearborn offices WEAR badges, that’s more than we can say for most of our federal officers currently, isn’t it?

We are a melting pot of immigrants unless you're of indigenous decent. Also, to become an American citizen and properly "assimilate" to our culture takes a long time. So it only makes sense to have public servants have designated liaisons and translators to help those who in the midst of becoming full fledged citizens, don't you think?

You can be Arab and also an American. You can also speak Arabic and be an American. There is no such thing as an "American" ethnicity or an "American" language.
 
The spoken language is English. To become a naturalized American citizen you have to learn to read, write and speak English. It doesn't make sense to encourage other languages or communities who cling exclusively to some other language or culture.

This is absurd. We assist people in becoming assimilated into our culture. Its why Muslims/Arabs are optimistic here, as opposed to in Europe, where they are ghittoized. It doesn't happen overnight. Translators play an important role in this.
 
Most of our officers do wear badges. "Badges, badges, we don't need no stinking badges."
Those who don't are participating in operations to find and arrest illegals, and criminals. It's for the sake of the operation and the safety of officers. Of course the left hates law enforcement so I see where you are coming from.
This seems to be a problem for the left. America is America. It's not some other country, with some other language. It is a culture that benefited from immigration of those who come here to become Americans and be a part of America. It's not about carving out your own little country. It that's want you want to do, stay where you were.

Our identity is that we are a nation of immigrants. Alwaus have been. Its what makes America great.

I am not as familiar with Dearborn Heights as I am with Dearborn, which, btw, has a higher Muslim population. Driving through Dearborn is a bit eerie at first glance because, at least around the major areas with all the businesses, everything is in Arabic.
Then you get to the quiet areas with homes and schools. Everything is so neat and tidy. Not everything is neat and tidy around Detroit. Have you heard?

I highly recommend mingling a bit. We are made of all sorts, aren't we? Not too many of us are native.
I remember back in the day when I watched Fox News that being a patriotic American meant to be up in arms against all foreign folks. Then I reminded myself that I am one of those foreigners.
