After being robbed a handful of times in the past few months, one Baltimore coffee shop is no longer accepting cash to stop the robberies and keep their staff safe.

They would lose my business...there are plenty of places to get a coffee.
Meh.
I don't see the big deal.
I've usually got unlimited plastic on me (within reason), but only a limited amount of cash. So no big deal. Seems lately I use cash for tipping and Lotto, and that's about it.

I don't need drugs to escape reality. How do you buy your dope?
Yeah - but they gotta' buy coffee & donuts too, just like the rest of us! :mrgreen:Only hookers and drug dealers use cash anyways
You know that changes when you get a job, right? :2razz:It's rare I ever have cash on me.

I would expect hookers & drug dealers *do* know how to close a deal!Coffee is for closers
Around where I live the trend is to refuse to take plastic, because the credit card processors take a 2-5% cut which really eats into profits. The only places I am ok with this is are the taco bus and the weed store, otherwise I tend to avoid the cash only places.

I don't even do checks anymore. Nothing to balance. I just look at my checking account online every few days, to make sure I don't get any charges I'm not aware. That's it.I hardly use cash anymore at all. It's easier to balance my checkbook and keep track of expenditures that way. The only stores around here that take cash only are weed dispensaries and I don't toke (anymore).
Cash will soon be a think of the past - it'll be a lot harder on criminals that way. Even folks with poor credit can get debit cards.
I agree, but it's getting too late I think. This is going to spread like wildfire. It is a dangerous step closer to complete overlord of your expenditures. You are a ball of info. Please keep it to yourself.

One other important reason for small businesses refusing to take credit cards is that it forces them to report a larger percentage of their business income than they would otherwise have to report. That 5% cut is VERY unusual. The credit card service that links with a smartphone takes 2.75% on all major credit cards including American Express. Most deposits to one's bank account next business day. Many of these businesses won't take checks either. That combination is a dead give-away.

I just hope this coffeshop is allowing customers to tip on their credit slips. Starbucks doesn't, and I think this is a bit unfair for their baristas.
Why so? Baristas make at least minimum wage unlike servers.
