yeah I think the only way to create universal healthcare anyone will vote for is to not have such harsh lifestyle limitations.

I understand the logic, but if implement broad cost saving lifestyle controls it really will be orwellian governmental control.

Society just has to accept the burden of unhealthy people- otherwise we'll all suffer.

It's really an issue of what you want. Do you want to save money and have the government moderating what you eat and what you do endlessly, or do what you want and just accept that some people are paying slightly more for other peoples poor choices? I'd rather pay more for the freedom.

Of course, I drink like a fish, so I'm biased.

The reasoning would allow them to not hire fat people.

But smokers are everybody's legislative scapegoat.

Man I can't wait till there is a tobacco black market.

I agree. Private business should be able to make that decision, even though I wouldn't like it. Seeing the government do this is infuriating. I don't like to see the erosion of personal freedoms. Granted, one can still smoke, but it shouldn't preclude you from getting a job.

Instead of a black market they're just wont sell to us anymore because it's too much of a hassle and the margins are too low.

Europe has long surpassed North America in tobacco consumption, and Asia just recently surpassed Europe.

Marlboro doesn't care if you or I smoke, we're not the ones making them their money. They gave up on the US market a long time ago.

I strongly suspect within the decade Marlboro will start printing all their packs in Mandarin just to save costs.

I personally wont buy cigarettes in stores in the North. Once a year when I visit my family in North Carolina I take a quick trip across the border to South Carolina and buy about 5 cartons. That usually lasts me the whole year.

They should stop hiring black people too, since they have a higher rate of heart disease and aids than other races.

Stop hiring Asians too, because they are bad drivers and get in car wrecks.

Women get breast cancer and have babies, which is expensive.

Men get prostate cancer, which will drain the public funds.

I guess they'll just have to start using robots in Sarasota.

I hope they hire nice three law robots instead of genocidal terminator robots.

It doesn't look good considering the Governor of the state is, in fact, a terminator.

EDIT: Nevermind... for some reason I thought the story was from California. Oh well, it was funny anyway.

The problem is the zero law, that the robots discover we are too stupid, so the robots need to take over control to protect us.

I detest smoking. This is the one thing that my husband could do that would absolutely assure a divorce (cheating is considered a lesser offense in my book). I support this--whether the legal basis is rational or not. I will be interested to see what happens with this law. Someone is going to challenge it.

Universal (socialist) healthcare will end up killing people. There will be no choices and your government will decide if you live or die. That's not a free market democracy.

I agree with the first few posters - private company, yes - public, no.

I don't smoke, but I couldn't stand by and accept this. The true measure of liberty is the way you fight for that which you do not agree with.

However, if they did increase insurance premium pay-ins or refuse to offer it to smokers altogether, I would support that. Otherwise it would be defending moral hazards.

Yes, Thats exactly what happens in europe

I do not see how this is Constitutional.
Are we not "Equal"?

What is next?
Drinkers
Fat People
Middle Aged People

They could should start doing genetic screening.
Wouldn't want to hire someone that has a history of testicular cancer in their family...
Women and men have different levels of medical expensive during different
age groups.
Maybe we should refuse to hire each for particular age groups.

Maybe we should just refuse to hire women period...
Having a baby can completely disrupt an office due to the missed time.
Not to even mention the added medical expense.

Hell, maybe we should refuse to hire anyone at all.
Those human beings are just a liability...

Its always quite backstabbing for the government to turn on the tobacco companies they where partners in crime for a long long time.

I agree with you John1234.

My problem is, is that people that support this do not understand the point you have made here.

No kidding! They just don't get it. The people that support this tripe are just smokin nazis. People who don't believe in freedom and liberty AT ALL. They only believe in freedom to do what they agree with. As Gipper said, "The true measure of liberty is the way you fight for that which you do not agree with."

Additionally, the pro-government healthcare folks will STILL come in here and claim that government healthcare won't result in limitation of freedoms - for everyone. Even when the evidence of it is staring them square in the face.

It doesn't help that the Europeans come in here and tell us it won't be that way, because it isn't so in their country. I'm not sure why they expect our government to behave like theirs, when our country has a vastly different makeup than any one of theirs does on just about every level.

Regardless... I wouldn't want healthcare like theirs anyway. I don't know why anyone would. Not when I have the choice to have actual GOOD healthcare, at my whim.

Evidence of removal of freedoms is staring folks in the face now. They're trying to do it NOW, even before we have universal healthcare. I cannot comprehend why people think that would change.

Oh wait, it WILL change. It'll get worse and more invasive. I can't for the life of me figure out why people refuse to see that when it's already happening. (and hell, some people actualy APPLAUD it since it doesn't affect them ... yet.)

You know you and I agree on this issue. My question for you is, where are we going to go for quality healthcare when the government finally takes it over in our country? People come here from all over the world for the advanced technologies and treatments(that we can afford thanks to the private indusrty). Where are we going to have to go when that becomes unaffordable for the country?

Easy: Canada.

Thats funny, because they are coming here(to the Twin Cities in my neck of the woods) and paying out of pocket for procedures they don't care to have to wait for in Canada.

I just hope and hope that whoever implements the failed national healthcare system does so in such a manner that we smart ones can opt out of both paying for it, and using it. Then we can support private industry, technology, and research while getting more effective and better healthcare.

Screw the rest of them.
