SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been warning for months that California's budget is hurtling toward the proverbial cliff — the point at which the state, which boasts a $100 billion operating fund, runs short of money to pay its bills.

That time is about to arrive. While the scenario is less like a suicidal jump than a long debilitating tumble — Californians won't wake up one day to find state government has gone belly up — the fallout could be severe and far-reaching. And the pain will only multiply the longer the legislative budget stalemate lasts.

Starting in February, state Controller John Chiang plans to suspend some $3.7 billion in scheduled payments for at least 30 days. Among those not getting paid: taxpayers who file early awaiting their refunds, programs that help the poor and disabled and college students who rely on grants for tuition, housing and textbooks

If you ever questioned if the government would out and out steal from you, here's the answer.
The other point to be made is; don't overpay on your weekly tax deductions, you may not get it back.

Its those services and operating most people are wondering about.Is it for basic necessities like infrastructure(bridges, roads and etc),law enforcement/fire department,and public education(K-12 education) or is that money being wasted on non essentials?

I really hope Obama doesn't feel nice and give them any of my money. ****, they just approved a $9bn bond measure for high-speed rail this November (spending OK, gay marriage No way :doh).

They're talking about shutting down homicide for hours a day to meet costs.

At the very least I want Cali to beg for money. On their hands and knees.

They're getting owned by the current crisis, as there taxes are dependent on capital gains and income taxes on the top earners, both of which have fallen off a cliff. But instead of saving during good times, they simply add more programs like a family that adopts as many kids as it can then finds out they can't pay the bills.

Right now, the dem idea seems to be to relabel taxes as fees, which don't require 2/3 support, then increase them up the wazoo.

Yes. I would rather not get my tax refund immediately than have him sign off on a bloated budget that would lead to more borrowing.

You realize that a jaywalking fine in Los Angeles can fluctuate depending on how much money the city projects it needs in a month? No...seriously. It does.
