This is completely undefendable by the police.
They should at least be trained how to act with the elderly and confused who pose zero threat to them.
The fact that the local police department is defending this officer is a disgrace as this could happen to anyone with alzheimers as it's pretty common these days.

That officer need to be fired and charged with assault and the entire department who defended him need retraining in basic humanity and the law.

The town of Guthrie, Kentucky has 1330 citizens in the last census.
The lawsuit against the city is going to cost each of the property owners a fair amount.
I doubt they carry enough insurance to cover the award.

Putting body cams of officers is one of the best things that has ever been done for citizens rights.

Anyone in law enforcement should be tested for temperament before even being accepted for training as a cop. Many people are just not psychologically suited to the job. It isn't something everyone can do well.

It seems like basic human empathy and ability to treat the public with even a modicum of respect goes out the window with some police.
Anyone that doesn't instantly comply with enough deference will be arrested and possibly beaten.

I really hope this situation ends in a change to police training in dealing with people with mental issues.

I've said it before. Cops don't need to be sent to situations involving mental disabilities or issues like Alzheimers or Autism (think Elijah McClain). It never ends well. Not sure how that can be done but cops clearly don't understand what they are dealing with or they don't care.

This particular cop is despicable.

Time line:
You beat up an old man, likely until unconscious, because you think he's on drugs. Nobody said anything about an assault, either. No wonder the guy looked confused. He certainly wasn't belligerent like you claimed.
You lie or omit pertinent information about said beating, so EMS doesn't think you are a scumbag. (Well they know now, especially since you happily described your assault as a "donkey punch")
You lie to fellow officers about the interaction (so they think you are a hero, I guess)
You find out he is the subject of a Silver Alert.
Instead of taking the erratically behaving subject of the Silver Alert (missing dementia patient now slammed to the ground and "donkey punched") to be checked out at the hospital, you drag his ass to jail on a drug charge. (It is a good thing the family had him tested)

Questions:
Why is EMS is so chummy with the LEOs? Their duty is to their patient. Maybe all people "donkey punched" are deserving, and the LEO has this jesus-like aura around his head, demonstrating his saintliness and infallibility?
Why is officer training so bad when it comes to drugs? or is it, really? maybe more of the "don't touch my gun!" BS. I wonder how many false positives? And probably like drug sniffing dogs, they don't track these stats because if they did, it would probably invalidated as a worthless bit of testimony.
Why believe the gas station employee who looks like he is on drugs? More of 'believe the white people because they never lie' BS?

The sheer levels of callousness and simple human decency towards a confused person is astounding.
It's almost like anything but complete and instant submission to police is seen as a valid reason to assault the public.

Anyone who defends this is simply wrong as dementia as massively on the rise and this could happen to any one of us in the future if this is allowed to continue.

I know some communities are trialing mental health teams as first responders. The police accompany them but the social workers take the lead to keep the situation from escalating.

I'd like to see more of this.
