  1. Being a computer dummy I often am in need of computer help. Thiss thread is dedicated to that subject.:badpc:

Well, it seems to be the right location for this.

For all, who are using Windows 8 RTM (which is the final Version), this could be interesting.
I was searching for some useful things to improve Windows 8 and I found some great tools.

1) Metro sucks and the missing start menu is terrible. I found an easy solution on the web. It disables Metro completely and gives you a native startmenu with ist settings via properties. Its name is exploer7 and it makes the Windows 7 Explorer.exe usable on Windows 8. Just copy the Win 7 Explorer Folder to C:, launch patchex7 and follow the instructions there. Requires no permanent running. Read here what you also hve to know about it:

2) The ugly theme of Windows 8 is terrible. The fat borders around every window in particular. Adjust this borders with with Tiny Windows Borders. To get an errorfree look, set "Border Padding" to 1, not to 0. Requires no installation or permanent running.

3) I do not like that the pinned items on the task bar expanding to display the task, when opened. With Taskbarpinner, the pinned icons stay there, so the taskbar will not jumble open tasks and icons. The program is made to pin any file to the taskbar. It will work with Win7 too and requires no installation or permanent running.

4.) Windows 8 allows only a few colors for the themes. With Aero8tuner, you can set a customized color. Requires no installation or permanent running.

5.) Since Vista, you can set the size of desctop icons and shortcuts. But the shortcut arrows will not change their size. Customize or disable the arrows errorfree with FXVisor. I added the 64 Bit version only. Works with Vista, Win 7 and Win 8, requires no permanent running.

All programs here in a zip file:

Great! Since you started the thread I'll contribute with a general complaint.

I just spent the majority of my day trying to recover my archived Outlook files which happen to have a whole bunch of really, really important stuff including current emails that are just too damned big for my mailbox. Everything I did resulted in getting an error saying that the .pst file was unavailable even though I could see the little SOB on the server. Naturally I assumed that it was corrupt and a quick call to my tech guy (who happened to be in Lubbock instead of Tucson where I needed him) only gave me more reason to suspect that this was the problem so my solution was to restore the file from a backup.

Well, among other backups I use Mozy but after 3 attempts there I still had no luck so I went to a local backup and did the restore which said it finished. One more time I went back and tried to access the folder and got the same stinking error so now, after 6 hours screwing around with this I closed outlook, restarted and BINGO! there was my folder with all the stuff I needed.

I'm no expert but it seems to me that if I just tied that first I could have saved the whole day of frustration.

Sometimes I really, really hate computers.
