Comfort Food Again

I did not know there was a Cottage Pie. Also didn't know Shepards Pie contained only lamb.

Over here, it's very important to recognise the difference. The shepherd tends to sheep thus shepherd's pie is made with lamb mince. Cottage pie can be made with beef only or beef and other meats minced.

So lasagna must have been just cheese, meat and pasta. No wonder tomato sauce was invented.

A similar old recipe reads "Take flour of paynedemayn and make erof past with water and make erof thynne foyles as paper with a roller; drye it harde and see it in broth" so I am guessing that broth did the job before tomatoes were brought over from South America.
The other import killed this dish off - Brits adopted potatoes in a very big way.
