Chocolate Jesus Display Shut Down After Catholic Outcry

(CNSNews.com) - A Manhattan art gallery cancelled plans Friday to exhibit a life-sized naked Jesus made out chocolate during the Easter season after news of the exhibit ignited anger among the Catholic community.

The "My Sweet Lord" display was created by artist Cosimo Cavallaro and made out of more than 200 pounds of chocolate. It shows Christ stretched out as if on the cross.

"The media have reported that a so-called 'work of art,' manifestly intended to offend the Christians of our community, will be displayed during Holy Week in the Roger Smith Hotel in Manhattan," Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of New York, said in a statement.

"It is a scandalous carving of Jesus Christ allegedly made out of chocolate. What the Roger Smith Hotel would hope to achieve by this sickening display, no one seems to know. The Catholic community is alerted to this offense of our faith and sensitivities. This is something we will not forget," Egan added.
 

Actually, they have a point using chocolate. Do you really believe that Jesus had blond hair and blue eyes, as depicted in many paintings? Considering that Christ was a semite, I am willing to bet that he may have had nappy hair. :mrgreen:

I don't see what the big deal is. I am a little disappointed in my fellow Catholics for making such a fuss over nothing.

What does the left have to do with this and how are they hypocrites?

It seems like an artist was trying to make a dramatic piece and the conservative catholics freaked out. No one would care if it was Allah except conservative Muslims. The same as no one cares if it's Jesus but conservative Christians.

I don't know and I don't care.........I will leave it up to you to bring **** like this up.....In the naked Jesus they even showed his privates.............I see you had no comment about if Christians has done something like this with Allah........You and people that think like you would be outraged........There would be blood in the streets..........

Actually, I did have some comments about those who did something very similar with Allah. Remember the Dutch cartoonists? I posted that it was very hilarious. So who you gonna hate now?

I don't think that took place in America. Here, whether it be a naked, chocolate Jesus or a naked, sugar Allah...it would spur controversy and outcry and it probably wouldn't be shown. I mean, what's there really to bitch about here? Someone made a big, chocolate Jesus; some Catholics bitched, and it's not being shown. Seems like it worked out fine, especially since something so "offensive" isn't being shown now.
 
Google "religious gifts" and you get over 3 million links. Most of the stuff for sale is pretty tacky.

I never knew chocolate Jesuses were so popular. I just amused myself for a good hour looking at all that crap.:mrgreen:
I couldn't find any chocolate Allahs though, very disappointing but makes sense as Muslims who follow "halal" dietary law don't eat chocolate.

How many people died by the hand of non-conservative Muslims in direct result of the dutch paintings?

If it's indeed "Horseshit" the number should be substantial. Also good job avoiding my initial question of you proving how this article shows hypocrisy in the "left".

As I read this I started getting a headache from the :spin: you've given these news.

Who exatcly complained about this chocolate Jesus? Conservatives. How the hell is it the lefts fault if some artist decides to take his artistic creation down because conservative Christians have become offended? Just how the hell is this a sign that the left is full of hypocrites?


The left defended the rights of the Danish papers to print out what they wanted didn't it? It indeed did. It felt the cartoons were offensive but defended these peoples rights to draw them. If anything this is a sign that conservatives who defended the rights of the danish cartoonists to draw cartoons that would be offensive to Muslims aren't really all that in love with the 1st. Only when it's convenient .

To summarize :

When the danish cartoons drew cartoons that were offensive to Muslims. You defended their right to do so. And so did "we"(the left).

When this artist carved a chocolate Jesus. You felt it was insulting to your faith. So did we but we still defended his right to the 1st amendment. You on the other hand asked him to take it down.

Who's the real hypocrite?

We all know that the first thing that Laura Bush did when George was court appointed Pres. was to give THOUSANDS of OUR tax $$$ to the Arts.
So, I blame Laura for this! She has power over them if she wanted to use it.
 

Who says it was desinged to offend? He could making a point about the comercilisation of spirtuality rather than just trying to piss people off. I can see how its possible offence was the goal but i think your jumping to conclusions about what he was trying to say. Either way the titles brilliant:lol:

Lets see if I have this straight. NP posts that the left are hypocrits because the right shut down an art exhibit that offended NP. He then expresses the sentiment that a similar situation with a Danish cartoon was the cause of much death, and Christians are discriminated against more than anyone else.
All this regardless of the fact his own brethren are the reason Choco-Christ will melt without a display, and no one is rioting, dying, or otherwise giving a Cr@p except the very Christians that took offense in the first place.

Pardon me....I need to go lay down and take a pill...
