Chinese scholar at UM tried to smuggle biological pathogen into the U.S., feds say

Is there any evidence she intended to use the fungus for anything other than research?

A few tiny samples of a fungus is not going to do anything when that fungus is already wide spread.

Heck the companies I have worked at have made millions of liters of fungicides meant to combat that fungus ( to prevent FHB) making hundreds of millions in the process.

A few tiny sample might result in an extra 10 000 Litres of sales.

Not terrorism just research
Clearly terrorists.

If they wanted to research it, they could have obtained a sample from any of a dozen legal ways... or joined any of the several dozens of research projects already involved.

But they didn’t... and their text messages prove they intended to skirt the law.

Yes the skip the red tape on bringing the samples in. The months and months of forms and wasted time and energy.

Efficiency is the name of the game, and Trump is against red tape, so these scientists should be applauded rather than vilified

We really do make it so inconvenient to spread bio weapons in the United States.

Just the way we are; they planned and plotted for months to bypass a few forms they could have filled out.

Seems like they wasted their time; could have spent it studying the biological hazard with any of the dozens of established teams... but instead they wasted a bunch of time to try to spread it themselves.

Spread it themselves? It is already widespread in the US and Canada. Heck it make the company i work at millions a year formulating fungicides to combat fhb.

The few forums is likely more like months of work and months of delays

It sounds like China is using the CIA playbook(Operation Mongoose in Cuba) against us

So it is the USA's fault that they were targetted?

Precisely. It's sort of weird to see our local MAGA running around like chickens with their heads chopped off over a widespread fungus that can be found in just about every state, has been studied for over a century, and is dealt with matter-of-factly as an entire industry. It's Tuesday though, so I guess they need something to be scared about.

Exactly why we don't need some assholes spreading it wider.

Those millions are direct loss of profits for farmers and direct costs to the people who buy the food they grow. Imagine if all that money could be saved!

Oh, for sure.

But they also spent months and months planning to circumvent the rules... they could have simply filled out the forms and now been studying this bio weapon, instead of sitting in jail.

I'm just glad it wasn't some Mexican guy at Home Depot who was buying sand to lay a paver patio.

The small quantity they had would have resulted in tens of thousands dollars in damage not millions of dollars. Nearly every farmer sprays some sort of fungicide on his crops to control various types of fungus, often twice a year even in dry areas like Alberta,

Did they violate US import rules send regulations certainly was it a nefarious plot to destroy the US food industry no

For that to work they would need a crap load more and ways to spread it on crops and hope US farmers don't already use fungicides ( which they do)

Heck Bayer shutting down their Monsanto Roundup division over lawsuits will have a far bigger impact as they supply I believe 40% of the US market for Glyposate ( and Chinese suppliers making up the rest in some way shape or form)

Were they not planning on growing more? Even if just to study, which they clearly were not doing.

It seems weird that you say this would cause damage, even though farmers spray for this... seems like it's probably a serious problem that causes millions in damages each year, even though millions are spent to fight it? So multiple millions lost?

To grow more ( enough to make an impact) would require hundreds of thousands of dollars for bio reactors stored in clean rooms. The small quantities they had would perhaps effect a section of land

Farmers spray herbicides every year, but some weeds don't die, impacting yield negatively

They do the same for insects and insects still impact yield.

The quantity the researchers had would have caused minimal impact

Not bio terrorism

The fungus that was brought to the US already is in Canada and the US, it causes Fusarium head blight,

It is in Alberta and there are plenty of of fungicides that control it
Don’t confuse them with reality!

Isnt that the exact research facilities they were accessing?

How else were they going to study it?

Holy shit. Glad it doesn't grow and spread in the wild.

Wait... does it grow and spread in the wild?

Farmers spray herbicides every year, but some weeds don't die, impacting yield negatively
For sure. That's why Canada and other countries restrict which plants can be imported, and require paperwork for certain plants. It's like they don't want them to spread or something...

Right?

Imagine if all country like Canada didn't allow people to just imported insects and stuff without declaring them?

The quantity the researchers had would have caused minimal impact
Until they cultivated it and grew more, and spread it.

Literally they spent more time hiding this than they would have if they had just filled out paperwork and joined any of the dozens of research teams.

It already is in the wild, no need to grow it.

It is wide spread in Canada and the us, why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to grow something in a plant that already exists in the wild

She was caught in a Chinese honey trap. He was smuggling a bioweapon and using her for access to a laboratory.

Any evidence her boyfriend was intending to use it for anything other than research?

Exactly.

Which is exactly why we know they weren't going to study it. They could have done that easily. But they chose to smuggle it in, instead of simply studying the strains already spreading.
