...The U.N. Security Council met on Sunday to discuss U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear sites as Russia, China and Pakistan proposed the 15-member body adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.

China's U.N. Ambassador Fu Cong said parties should restrain the "impulse of force, avoid exacerbating conflicts and adding fuel to the fire," according to the state broadcaster CCTV.

Fu said parties, especially Israel, "should immediately cease fire to prevent the situation from escalating and avoid the spillover of war."

Iran was hurt "but the United States credibility was also damaged- both as a country and as a participant in any international negotiations," Fu said.

State media commentary late on Sunday said the U.S. move was extremely dangerous and provocative. The Global Times newspaper in an opinion piece, said external military interference would never bring peace, and only "deepen regional hatred and trauma."...

That's a carefully worded lackluster response. Add China to the list of countries happy that the USA took on Iran.

...[T]he Chinese leader urged the warring parties, “especially Israel,” to cease fire as soon as possible to avoid further escalation and regional spillover.

And notably, in a veiled message to Trump, Xi emphasized that “major powers” that have a special influence on the parties to the conflict should work to “cool the situation, not the opposite.”

Beijing has long accused Washington of being a source of instability and tensions in the Middle East...

Dancin in the dark.

Clearly you DO NOT have a clue how Begin operates. To them, Americans are crude and rude.

It's not a lackluster response. If they had wanted that they would have remained officially silent and had their agents attack from below. They chose to go public and, in diplomatic terms "Scolded" Washington.

Remember. The only thing keeping Mainland China off Formosa is public opinion. They want Formosa, consider it part of the 'home land' and have lusted after it for a century or two. One slip, on falter by the US diplomatic mission and Begin comes ashore, with nothing anyone can do about it. And Trump is just stupid enough to make the mistake they need!

Go ahead. Under estimate them.

McArthur did.

Trump = 0 credibility. Trump-led America = Lim x as x ->o. Where x is the power of Trump.

China is more practical than people give them credit for. They don't necessarily need to invade and occupy Taiwan; they just need to know that Taiwan won't forever separate itself from the Mainland, and they need to know that the United States won't facilitate such an effort. That's why China gets irate and flies fighters whenever a US delegation arrives. They can accept an autonomous Taiwan, but an identity that becomes permanently more Westernized and US/Japan-allied than China? They'll never accept that, and they will go to war over it eventually.

Meh, we dont owe China or any other nation an explanation on military strategy. Is China our ally? No.

Not that I'm supporting TACO's actions on Iran but I'm also not buying into China's complaints.

Who is Russia to propose anything?

It's a sad day when China sounds like the reasonable party.

Well China has absolutely NO credibility, so who gives a rats patootie what they think about U.S. credibility?

Yeah, international law is for the weak! Might makes right! 'murica #1!

Why did you delete the rest of my post? Or at least post something that directly addresses what you did leave?

I'm not sure they can accept an autonomous Taiwan. Everyone would be better off if some permanent arrangement for that, which includes the west also respecting it could be done, but I suspect neither China nor the US will agree.

It's becoming the norm while Republicans are in power. Then again, countries are better at sounding good when they criticize other countries when they're not involved. Even Russia sounds good on Gaza or Iran - not on Ukraine.

Which part was that? America does owe other nations - including and thanks to the structure of the US-supported UN Security Council especially the likes of China, Russia, UK and France - an 'explanation' (and more) for its military actions. That international oligarchy is not an ideal basis for law, but that's what we've currently got and the USA itself was one of its key architects. Claiming as you did that America should not be accountable to China or any other nation seems like a fairly straightforward expression of contempt for international law in favour of American exceptionalism and 'might makes right' philosophy.

Once you've (seemingly) endorsed such a philosophy, being disappointed that Trump is the one who has the might seems kind of irrelevant.

Leverage on the world scale is what matters, not credibility in CA's eyes. And China has leverage now.

Not before a military attack. It depends on the strategy but you dont always want to warn the enemy of an attack.

And we are not accountable to China for our nation's security. We cant ignore it or consequences from China or other countries either.

Okay, and...? These are the kind of rationalizations used by Russia, Iran, Israel, Al Qaeda and so on too, but they don't magically make illegal aggression legal.

While presumably non-zero, the 'security' risk that Iran poses to the USA is orders of magnitude less than the security risk that the USA poses to Iran... or for that matter the likes of Panama or Greenland, or frankly pretty much any non-nuclear-armed country on the planet should the whimsy strike its supreme leader. Moreover what little threat Iran did pose in 2024 had been ramped up in 2018 by the United States' own decision to torpedo the painstakingly-developed multilateral nuclear deal, and has now been amplified a hundredfold by this attack. I'd guess that there was literally zero possibility of Iran ever threatening the USA with a 'proper' nuclear weapon; the slim but non-zero risk came from the potentials for proxy terrorism and the possibility of a dirty bomb successfully smuggled into an American city, both of which are now greatly escalated.

Rallying around the flag in a show of good old-fashioned patriotism just because China happened to be one of the countries criticising Trump's illegal and idiotic actions just doesn't seem like an appropriate response, to my mind.

Only happy because that gives them a free hand to take Taiwan if they want to.

China has more credibility around the world than we do.

China helps people build roads and ports.

We drop bombs.
