WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts on Sunday turned his focus to the promise, and shortcomings, of artificial intelligence in the federal courts, in an annual report that made no mention of Supreme Court ethics or legal controversies involving Donald Trump.

Describing artificial intelligence as the “latest technological frontier,” Roberts discussed the pros and cons of computer-generated content in the legal profession. His remarks come just a few days after the latest instance of AI-generated fake legal citations making their way into official court records, in a case involving ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

“Always a bad idea,” Roberts wrote in his year-end report, noting that “any use of AI requires caution and humility.”

With Thomas & Alito, I'd be more concerned with natural stupidity.

AI citations should be the number 1 concern. Its already in the system and if your people arent up to speed or on the ball It can hurt you badly. I am not talking just criminal cases, but civil cases as well. AI based on language models are not ready. Very close attention to them must be paid lest something small but significant get by. AI is not mistake free hence the problem with relying on it. SI was using AI generated content and they were found out. Take a look at much of the AI generated content on the interwebs. Not exactly what I would call inspiring.

One of the troubles with some of the methods used to train AI's has been that using historical human-generated data to train them usually means that the AI inherits the bias of the humans who generated that data.

I think they're starting to experiment with ways to train AI that do not rely on historical data, however.
