(CNN) — Chicago marked 2016 as the deadliest year in nearly two decades, data released by the Chicago Police Department shows. The city saw a surge in gun violence in 2016: 762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents, and 4,331 shooting victims, according to a statement released by the department on Sunday.

Attacks on police officers nearly doubled in 2016, which represents a "completely unacceptable rise in violence," the release said. However, it did not state specific figures for attacks on officers. As part of plan to combat the rising homicide count, the Chicago Police Department will amp up its force in 2017.

Some interesting facts about Chicago:

-Chicago is rated as the 11th most liberal city in America.

-Chicago hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1931.

-Maywood, Illinois, which is a Chicago suburb, was named the 4th most liberal city in the US by the Washington Post. The violent crime rate in Maywood is more twice the national average.

Personally, I predict this thread will receive 5 or 6 comments max. However, start a thread about someone nobody has ever heard of who said a racial epithet during the office Christmas party, and you're guaranteed 500 comments.

Sure am glad I don't live there. Who is running that city anyway? Isn't that where Obama is from? Wait, the mayor is Rahm Emanuel. He used to be the Democratic Congressional Committee Chairman, and Obama's Chief of Staff. Those are supposedly some good credentials. I guess his experience is like Hillary's, lots of bad experience. Their politics seems to be working not so good for that city.

The number cought my eye. It is way over double the number of murders in Germany with eighty million inhabitants.

You just posted a story that's nearly 3 years old. My guess is that something else has caused the spike, as figures held steady until this year:

2006: 471
2007: 448
2008: 513
2009: 459
2010: 436
2011: 435
2012: 516
2013: 441
2014: 432
2015:492
2016:762

With the tensions between cops and the black community, I wonder if cops have pulled out of certain areas over the course of this year.

Could be. Loretta Lynch's investigation into the CPD could have been another driving factor in police not pursuing enforcement.

Personally, I think that violence in cities like Chicago tends to spike according to what's going on in the drug trade. When there's plenty of drugs to sell, gangs have less need to war over turf. With Chapo Guzman's arrest, there may be a struggle for power occurring in the Sinaloa cartel, which provides most of the drugs for Chicago. This could result in a shortage of drugs available.

All the more reason to legalize drugs. Hard to get in a drug war with Walgreens.

We haven't seen a struggle for power here in Sinaloa, yet.

They would never say so but yeah, that's it. Chicago feels completely safe aside from the south end

The west side is bad too.

Nobody can blame this on police and keep a straight face. The most violent cities all have similar demographics to Chicago, and I doubt that the police are to blame in all of those cities.

Cities in general are more violent. Man. What is the common thread? Humans? Oh. Well ****.

if you don't want to enforce the law, if you only want to enforce it in safer areas, don't become a cop

although i'm fine with using additional forces against the gangs, maybe putting the military to use to actually defend freedom for once. Kind of ridiculous to have so many of them in germany but not where they're needed
