Going for a wedding near Wheaton and Naperville in early October. Haven't booked a place yet. Any and all suggestions are welcome from what to see and do and where to stay. We have never been.

Thank you!

So many questions.

Want to stay downtown or in the burbs?
How long?

My residency in the city was only 3 years but my lovely wife was born and raised in Chicago, she still owns a condo in the city and we travel very frequently to visit family, at least 5-6x a year for the last decade.

Early October is tricky because the weather will be starting to turn so go-tos I'd otherwise recommend (say Morton Arboretum) could be shaky.

There are some interesting festivals and events in the area around that time. World Music Festival and Chicago Beer Festival are usually around that window so depending on when you arrive it could be a trip accessory.

Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum are often worth a visit, I've spent many a wonderful hour at both, in all seasons.

If you're looking to splurge and can afford the price tag and secure a spot, The Aviary is (IMO) the single best cocktail bar on the planet. It'll light your wallet on fire, but every sip will be worth it. It's high on my "once in a lifetime" list.

If I think of other things I'll try to drop them on this thread in the next few days.

There’s a small little Jazz bar that’s been around since Prohibition.

Cash only.

The Green Mill.

It’s not fancy, but it’s historical and worth checking out if only to say you have.

I’ll try to remember some other places, this was the first that came to mind when thinking of a place to suggest - it’s been a bit since I’ve been to Chicago and many of the places I’ve gone have been either for summer/spring or chain restaurants, hotels, etc that you can find in other places.

5 days. Still trying to figure the rest. Wedding is in the burbs. I would like to see the sights, the bean and park. Deep dish pizza. They have a circle line boat tour kind of thing like Manhattan?

So first you’ll want to decide your base- better to stay in the city than deal with the 45 min train ride in from Wheaton or Naperville.

I’d look for a hotel on the Near North side- north of the river and South of Chicago Ave.
Walkable to everything.

Sights are obvious- Milennium Park, Navy Pier (majorly touristy, but a great view), the Riverwalk, Magnificent Mile, etc. Museums - Art Institute, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium are all kind of together in a beautiful museum campus.

Come up to my neighborhood in the Gold Coast and walk the streets to see 1800s brownstones and mansions. Ride a rental ebike down the lakefront trail- a 20 mile trail that gets you access to all kinds of sights, including the free Lincoln Park Zoo. Learn to take the El (subway) and you can even more mobile to visit the West Loop (younger hip crowd- fantastic dining), Wrigleyville (there should be playoff baseball happening) or some of the great neighborhoods (Lincoln park, Logan Square) where restaurants are cheaper and more interesting.

The best thing to do is to get on a an architecture cruise- 45 min in the river with a great docent to point out what you’re seeing. The best is run by the CAC, but any one is good. A boat on the lake is nice too- we like the Windy- a sailing ship.

Restaurants are plentiful and great, and a bit more pricey in River North. Deep Dish pizza is always a controversy, but I’d recommend Lou Malnati’s, Uno/Due, or Labriola. Do try an Italian beef- Portillo’s or Buena are both nearby. Chicago dog at Portillos, Devil Dawgs, or the Kim and Carlos’ stand outside of the Field Museum.

North Fairfield Ave. Near Humbolt Park? Nice safe area with easy public transportation?
Thanks

My daughter used to live on that street!

Not the greatest for public transport- depends how close you are to the Blue line on California and Milwaukee. Pretty safe- the park can be sketchy at night- depends on your comfort with cities. Humboldt Park is sort of the border- West of the park is not great- East is pretty good.

Yep- then youre good!

If you’re around on a Tuesday. Stop at Bungalow by Middlebrow for the best thin crust pizza around. Also, Margie’s Candies is a fantastic old school ice cream parlor.

Chicago pizza….mmmmmm..

Rockwell Grill and Lou Malnati's for deep dish are recommended. Being able to have a few beers without driving will be nice.
On the weekend, check out Genes Sausage Shop’s rooftop cookout. And a short cab/uber will take you to the Green Mill, which is a unique experience.
