Could the amount of News coverage be one of the contributing factors in these mass killings, besides ideology, prejudice and being mentally imbalanced? Most of these radical extremist attacks are not just deranged and hateful but feel irrelevant and know that their terrorist acts will gain them the infamy they so desperately seek, even if it's posthumously.
I'm not saying don't report or cover the story but wall to wall, 24/7 Headline, cable, Internet and Newspaper coverage is simply TOO much and part of the cause célèbre. After 9/11, we weren't satisfied with tapping down AQ in Afghanistan, we had to erroneously take the fight to another country (Iraq), which turned into a disaster.
As long as people have free will, there will be horrible acts of violence from ignorance and extremist views, though we don't have to indelibly imprint them into everyone's minds, especially for those that are already unhinged. They think this is a way to achieve worth and notoriety.
At some point we need to take responsibility for giving them a platform, particularly excessive coverage by the self-interested News organizations. If all we're exposed to is horrific News on a daily basis, it becomes a part of our culture. Restricting our rights and freedoms for protection are not the answer. The TSA has become a bureaucratic nightmare because of these potential attacks.
The only way to beat a competing group of beliefs is to live by and show that ours are more successful, positive, humane, inclusive, fair and peaceful, not to stay in a state of overreaction perpetuating the cycle.
This is believed to be so, though I am not sure how good the science is. America especially loves the story of the celeb, and as well the story "the American dream turns to the dark side".
We eat that **** up!
Gives folks ideas.

I think it's like driving by a car accident, you don't want to see mangled bodies but something inside can't resist to look. Though, the News now days is sooo over the top with their mantra "If it bleeds, it leads." Anything that evokes a strong reaction is saturated thru the interconnectedness of our social fabric and it's not all healthy either.
No it is more like most people are stupid and cant come up with ideas on their own. This is why they tell you to make your house look good before you try to sell it even if it costs a bit, and why Steve Jobs famously said that the people dont know what they want till you show it to them. It is also by the way why there are huge calls to police porn, to get rid of the bondage and degradation and rape fetish porn, because too many stupid boys are getting ideas and cant be trusted to perform them safely, ideas they never in 100 years would have come to their brains had they not been shown. And that they learned from.
Ya know?
I don't think it's a lack of original thoughts or imagination. Part of the problem is free will and human nature, because we do copy each other. We can't regulate thought but maybe try to reign in some of the negativity that promulgates senseless violence thru living as better examples?
People tend to be both stupid AND lazy.
Me I am smart and lazy, I long ago decided to do as much I needed to do to look at myself in the mirror with pride. After that I probably stop working. And if that makes me a textbook narcissist I dont give a damn. If I were a Christian I would say that I was doing it for God and everyone would be cool (well, maybe not so much anymore now that Christianity is dying so fast). But you know, I am finding that I am a rare bird.
People as a whole are followers, with few trail blazers because it's easier, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Too many chef's in the kitchen doesn't work well. Sounds like you're a nonconformist to political correctness. If someone isn't a little self absorbed they're probably doing it wrong. We need more folks to challenge the status quo of emotionally overreacting with negativity, blaming and vengeance seeking.
Yes, and my break with liberalism and my eventual hostility towards the elite as a class started when I realize that these people who say they are the best will almost always without fail refuse to make a stand for truth if it would hinder them from what they want, which is usually wealth and reputation and cool toys and that glow of moral superiority which is oh so nice.
I think we are on the same page here.
I agree with this completely that people want to honor themselves above the truth. Unfortunately, when people start to not seek truth or put it above them, they become self deceived and lost. The framers of the Constitution were interested in what was best for everyone, which is truth in a nutshell.
