Cattle Ranchers In Texas Get Lab-Grown Meat Banned

Are you saying that the cattle ranchers cant organize and block the sale of fake beef?

Organize and block competitors? We didn't let buggy makers outlaw the car, or kodak outlaw digital cameras. If lab-grown beef is worse, consumers won't buy it and ranchers have nothing to fear. If it's better or cheaper, then that's just the market doing its job. Outlawing competition isn't "organizing" it’s protectionism at the expense of consumer choice. The purpose of the economy is to benefit consumers, not to enrich a small group of capitalists.

They can. They dont have to buy the real beef. Then they put the cattle ranchers out of business. Right?

Are you saying that the cattle ranchers cant organize and block the sale of fake beef? Why cant they?

And you know from prior conversations I dont care who puts what in their bodies and am against things like making drugs illegal...so your kneejerk retort fails. Now...why cant the ranchers organize to create a better market for their business?
I have no issue with cattle rangers organizing and putting up billboards explaining how their meat is better than lab meat, saturating TV and radio with ads for their meat, paying grocery stories to exclusively sell their meat.

I do have an issue with government deciding which side to protect and which side to ban. Unless there is a specific, proven health-related concern, state government should stay out of it and let customers decide which they prefer.

I would add to that comment that lab grown meat has been approved for the market by both the USDA and FDA. So Texas's (and Florida's) acts are illegal for preempting Federal regulations. As well as other ways they are illegal.

Also, the derogatory term "fake meat" or "fake beef" is false.

Lab grown meat uses the cells of Bos taurus and thus is legally beef and we can legally call it beef.

The only added requirement from the Federal Government is that it be clearly labeled a laboratory grown or laboratory cultured.

I have eaten lab grown beef and it is clearly improving.

Early versions were equivalent to the USDA carcass rating of canner, the lowest rating. Suitable for ground beef.

The stuff coming out now is approaching USDA standard. It will continue to improve as numerous established companies and startups work on improving the product.

We are not far from products reaching USDA select quality.

Yup, but that was the system of govt that you're against. Make up your mind ;)

Is there a govt and voters and a marketplace or not?

If lab-grown beef is worse, consumers won't buy it and ranchers have nothing to fear.

That's irrelevant to the debate. There's no "right" to a product.

If it's better or cheaper, then that's just the market doing its job.

Yes.

Outlawing competition isn't "organizing" it’s protectionism at the expense of consumer choice.

Might makes right in your libertarian world...if they get the votes, why cant they do so?

The purpose of the economy is to benefit consumers, not to enrich a small group of capitalists.

Source the bold. And why assume it's a small group? There's an entire economy wrapped up in producing, processing, delivering, preparing beef. The answer should be the same whether it's a small or large "group."

"Lobbies," for one example. The govt doesnt decide...legislators voted in by the people do. Or there could be a direct vote. They could do it in "the state's interest." I already mentioned that it's an entire industry, not just ranchers. It's part of the culture, entertainment, restaurants, tourism, etc. Big tax dollars...it could be seen as protecting the state economy.

Bit of devil's advocate and we all know lobbies can be bullshit but they're legal.

Certainly I won't argue that it is illegal - as you said, it's legal.

I just don't like it. :)

Sorry, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

That's irrelevant to the debate. There's no "right" to a product.

There's a right to trade. If you can't trade, you die.

Might makes right in your libertarian world...if they get the votes, why cant they do so?

No, that's your world.

Source the bold. And why assume it's a small group? There's an entire economy wrapped up in producing, processing, delivering, preparing beef. The answer should be the same whether it's a small or large "group."

Again, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Sorry, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Try harder. It shows your inconsistency, perhaps that's the blockage.

"In your world" is there a govt and voters and a marketplace or not?

There's a right to trade. If you can't trade, you die.

Cite that right? Do predators "trade?" I dont think so.

Modern humans can survive in a predatory fashion...do they have the right to do so? Taking marketshare by force from others, for example? That's why I asked you if there was a govt and voters in "your world." If so...and they get the votes...why is it wrong?

No, that's your world.

"na huh" isnt debate. Again, if they get the votes, why cant they do so?

Again, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

It's basic English but you dont seem to 'recognize' anything that doesnt confirm your bias. You wrote:

Source the bold ⬆️. And then respond to this: why assume it's (cattle ranchers) a small group? There's an entire economy wrapped up in producing, processing, delivering, preparing beef, including $$ from restaurants and tourism. The answer should be the same whether it's a small or large "group," right?

It's so easy to get the Right to ban something. Just claim it's WOKE!
That would mean that cattle bred via artificial insemination is off the table too.

If the beef cattle is made by any method other than by fornication it is an abomination before Gawd.

Sorry, I'm not here to play games.

So you run away after failing to uphold your beliefs, again. That should tell you something about your belief in right-leaning libertarianism. ;)

I looked at the bill text linked and it only mentions the offer for sale or selling - not the other parts.

This seems significant, because prohibiting the manufacture or possession of such so-called meat is a much greater violation of liberty.

The key issue with lab-grown meat for sale is that it's NOT meat. It's NOT safe. It comes out of cell cultures that are either highly prone to be contaminated with pathogens and/or are being done in the continual presence of antibiotics. It has no hormones but artificial hormones. It has no liver to break down toxins. It has no kidneys to extract toxins.

Lab-grown "meat" is not safe, not efficient, it's a complete and utter boondoggle. But people should be allowed to research it just in case I'm wrong.

Finding it on my dinner plate in the restaurant is a different question.

As opposed to the pathogens in natural meat, worms, E. coli etc
