(Bloomberg) -- Canada will remove its retaliatory tariffs on a long list of US products that comply with the existing North American trade deal, seeking to lower tensions with the White House.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce the decision Friday after a meeting with his cabinet. The government will change its tariff policy to align more closely with US measures.
it’s a major policy shift from Canada, which was one of the only countries to swiftly retaliate against US protectionism

Great news. Haven't been a fan of their "tough guy" approach and didn't think they'd be able to sustain it. Hopefully this new strategy will work out better for them.

I bet the OP is not aware that most countries (and now Canada apparently) don't have retaliatory tariffs on US goods. Some never had much of any to begin with. The idea of Trump implementing his own set of retaliatory tariffs is pure fantasy. He just loves raising taxes on Americans and fooling some into believing someone else is paying for them.

I bet you didn't read the OP, because I selectively quoted a statement that makes that very point. :)

Yeah their attitude came completely out of left field. From nowhere. Don't know why they acted that way. It's a mystery.
This is why...from the article.

"The move is also meant to prepare the ground for the review of the USMCA, which is expected to begin in the coming months."

It's important to know that Trudeau was the one that imposed these retaliatory tariffs not Carney. Carney immediately dropped many of them not sure why he took longer with these ones but I'm glad they are gone. I suspect this was the purpose of the call to Trump yesterday. Nonetheless I won't be buying any American products if I can help it...tariffs or not.

Me either.

I mean, I can understand the sentiment, but a French Bulldog looks a bit silly trying to "out tough-guy" a Rottweiler.
Not when the rottweiler is in reality a mini French poodle that only thinks it's a rottweiler. You know the type. Ankle biters.

There is no doubt that Canada would be in far worse shape if Trudeau were still in charge.

You misunderstood the tense.

Ah, missed that. Should have just said "tariffs' and not "retaliatory". The concept here being that Trump based his own "retaliatory" tariff rate on what other countries were tariffing US goods and services. Many countries have little to no tariffs on US offerings so Trump's tariffs are based on his feelings more than anything.

But the US isn't a mini French poodle. It's the largest economy in the world, accounting for about 75% of Canadian exports and 50% of imports.

Nations will do what they have to do to try to navigate this difficult period with a maniac at the helm of the US and avoid the worst damage they possibly can.

But make no mistake, Trumps actions have caused a shift in the world that will not end well for the US.

The way he's treated India will have massive ramifications for trying to contain China as an example.

Trumpists are stupid as ****.

Trumps legacy will be the decline of US in the global economy.

That is a just a great thing, right MAGA morons?

The current administration doesn't speak for the entirety, and the part of the US that thinks it's OK will learn it isn't productive to bully your friends. It puts their hackles up. You in your confidence may say so what, but when you piss off all your friends, it doesn't matter what your economic numbers are. You take your ball and go home, the other kids will have a better time without you.

As with anything in government where the goal is "fairness."

Again, you may not like him, you may hate his policy, you may think it unfair, but Canada is not going to out-bully the US on trade. It's not a fair fight. A change in strategy was definitely in order.

Canada, realistically, is decades away from being able to "take their ball and go home."

Those tariffs are being lifted because Trump is not charging tariffs on any USMCA compliant goods so Canada is finally doing the same. Trump folded first on this and Canada is months behind. I am surprised they waited so long. I wonder how much they took in while Trump was sleeping.

Products from Canada that qualify for the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), also known as CUSMA, are generally not subject to new tariffs in the United States, as these tariffs were specifically suspended by executive order on March 6, 2025, for compliant goods. Products must meet the USMCA rules of origin to qualify for this duty-free treatment.

I doubt Canada would ever want to take their ball and go home. That would be incredibly stupid and Carney is not stupid. Having said that we are already on the road to making ourselves less reliant on US trade and that is doable starting now. Carney has already opened up new economic and military deals with GB and the EU and is now in talks with China and India.
