Can the West defeat the Islamic threat?

CAN we? Yes.

WILL we? Probably not until a much bigger tragedy than 9/11 happens, and until we have a competent government. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think George W Bush has the political strength to do what is necessary to win in the short-term (invade Iran before it goes nuclear), or the willpower to admit his mistakes and make the necessary changes to win this war in the long-term (such as starting a Manhattan Project for energy independence).

Free women?

In Iran, women are free to be Doctors, Scientists, Teachers, Nurses, Engineers, Prison guards, members of the Iranian Parliament, Drive vehicles.

What they do not have the freedom to do is to flaunt their bodies in public.

Strangely enough the ARAB country we DO see as allied to us does NOT allow women to drive any vehicle on public roads as well as having as strict a regime on womens dress in public as Iran.
What country would that be? well you may ask. Saudi Arabia.
I see no objections (on these BLOGS) to the way in which they treat their women.
What women do not have the freedom to do, is to flaunt their bodies in public.

It is of course just something else with which to beat up on Iran.

Have you ever stopped to think why India, Pakistan were allowed without US hindrance to work on obtaining Nuclear power as well as build Nuclear bombs?

US assistance by way of machinery and expertise.

Iran, Pakistani Scientist plus Russian assistance, no US involvement.

The US has had ample times to actually ease the tensions with Iran, every instance has been bungled, whether deliberately or not I cannot say, but certainly this present administration has done everything possible to enrage Iran and not a single thing to ease tensions.

Am I in favor of the way (you imagine) women are treated in Iran, my answer is NO.
I have no problem with the way they are actually treated.

Am I in favor of the harsh punishments they give their people for crimes against their religious code, NO, I think they are cruel, but that is there law, I am not going to judge whether that is right or wrong.

I will however relate an actual occurrence, my wallet fell out of my pocket and landed on the seat of the vehicle I was travelling in. I left this vehicle, which was not locked, the windows were open.
When I returned to the vehicle 4 hours later I saw my wallet laying wide open on the seat, clearly open to reveal a large number of high value notes.
No one had taken it, this was in an Arabian country.

If I had done this anywhere in the US I would have not found that wallet on my return to the vehicle.

Makes you think or maybe not.

Made me think.
