including those perched on the highest rungs of the federal structure, have been remarkably silent on the off-setting spending cuts needed to balance the bills they have passed and are presently developing to combat the economic effects of the COVID-19 zoonotic viral pandemic.

Senate Majority Leader Addison McConnell? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? President of the United States of America Donald Trump? Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin? Anybody? Hello .. anybody?

OK. How about raising taxes to cover? Again, anyone? [Taps hearing aid to verify that it's working ...]

Once congress critters realized that annual federal "budget" deficits don't really matter, then why not use the national credit card to give away money to as many voters as possible in an election year?

We should also address the money going to corporations. Those entities, having now gained the recognition as 'people' with the right to spend money [speech] to influence elections, have not bothered with any attempt to gain the right to vote. They quite rationally consider it an appendage of extremely limited utility.

Regards, and stay well.

The donor class (aka major suppliers of campaign cash and/or PAC support) must be properly rewarded from the treasury to keep that campaign cash (legal bribes?) and PAC support coming.

This is a system of publicly funded campaigns - isn't that what many folks claim to support?

I would say the Dems would repeal the tax cut giveaway to the rich and large corps, regardless of the cost of fighting the virus and economic outfall therefrom, anyway. The Republicans will say cut back on what most benefits the avg American, and especially those with the least, by reducing SS, Medicare and Medicaid benefit/budget, which is what they've been saying anyway.

We should raise taxes and cut spending. Across the board.

Raising taxes puts heavier burdens on businesses and individuals. Economists have found that there is a point in increasing taxation where there is no longer a gain in overall government revenue but losses began to erase gains. That is why men like JFK cut taxes. When he cut taxes the economy improved and government revenues increased.

Cutting spending should be the first priority in any measure designed to improve the American economy.

Hi! I believe you're referring to the 'Laffer Curve'.

Many will agree with the general concept embodied in the curve. Unfortunately, it's surprisingly difficult to define the shape of the curve against an abscissa of actual percents.

If you want to have some fun, ask an economist -- any legitimate economist -- whether we're on the right or left side of the curve peak for a specific income/wealth group.

Meanwhile, from one of my reference sources, you might enjoy the following.

""There exists in modern democracies a group of citizens with excess, [that is, taxable,] money but not enough money to stay its extraction through the purchase of legislation or the rental of legislators. This group is the natural prey of politicians." A Beginner's Guide to Government. Aloysius Goldpen. Chelm Press, 2011, Gotham, GA.

Regards, and stay well.

Businessmen get rich trading in goods and labor. Cut the businessman's profit and it will affect what the businessman spends on materials and labor. Drops in purchases of goods and labor are reflected in downturns in the economy.

Leave the rich in America alone. Very bad people have done very bad things to thriving governments by turning the poor against the government. We can thank those wicked agitators for North Korea, East Berlin, Cuba, Venezuela and many more. Bad actors try to stir up the poor and ignorant in America against the rich as if that will improve the plight of the poor. That is a lie and should be exposed for the corruption it is.
