Blackout in Spain and Portugal

I'd imagine I have 2 weeks of tinned and bottled food in my cupboard without having really planned it, though I may be getting a bit bored of chickpeas and plum halves by the end of it.
I usually buy for two weeks, not the whole bunch but what needs filling up, case by case.
Spanish newspaper saying a forest fire in the south of France caused a power surge.
Oh, the blame game is in full fledge, it's everybody else's fault, as usual.

Now the PP is screeching over how the gubmint didn't give sufficient advance warning.

Well, considering that there was no internet whatsoever (immediately), not to mention all cell nets completely down, I guess they should have sent pony express riders to every person.

I was at a medical center (the third one that was finally open) to get a shot for my sprained back. Well, the kids filling the waiting room gave some insight into how they're gonna handle the next zombie plague.

Staring with pure incredulity at their (not so) smart phones, TikTok, Insta, blurb tube, Whatsapp and all the rest they spend their time on had disappeared, and the whinging was incredible.

When they finally tried to phone each other I told them to shut the **** up, seeing how those rare instances where there briefly was a net, were desperately needed for emergency calls (if there was a brief flickering of the net at all).

When I explained having heard this on the radio (also that the whole of Spain was down, plus Portugal and Southern Spain), they asked "what radio, we can't get any internet radio on our phones".

I reckon the much frowned upon practice of spanking urgently needs to be re-introduced.

Jesus wept.

I would think that at least some stations have at least got some procedure in place in the unlikely event of this happening.
That's what happened here, 5 seconds of unusual grid load and everything shut off automatically.

Stopped transformers from flying into space and electrical household goods everywhere from exploding thru the ceiling.

Getting back to normal is what then takes all the work.

I agree but those things aren't going to be much use if you live in the middle of a city that has just had the power system destroyed and won't be returing any time soon.

You're not old enough to have lived through the 3 day weeks of the 70's I guess.

I'm 49 so technically yes but I obviously don't remember.

I'm talking about a complete loss of power for months though. It bad on a different level.

Can't think of anywhere in the 1st world that has happened.

I worked in Nigeria for 3-4 years and the longest I had to go was 2 weeks. There, power / water / petrol in different combinations could be out for days and that included in cities. Petrol was especially ironic as Nigeria produces a high quality oil that is good for petrol cars.

If an event like a once in a generation space storm does hit us it may indeed happen.
If London had the power system completely blown it would take months if not years to fix.
It would be a disaster on a scale nobody has seen before.

I shouldn't laugh but I did!

and I hope your back gets better soon 🤗

What city are you in??

Marbella is my favorite Spanish city 🇪🇸
30 km from there in a white mountain town overlooking the Mediterranean and on a clear day I can see Africa from porch.

Also there are far better "small" towns and cities than richie rich tourist Marbella 😁.

Maybe, but I enjoy good nightlife and Marbella is perfect for that
