Ukraine will enter into a “golden era” after the current conflict with Russia and become the “highest growth economy in Europe without any doubt,” according to an Australian mining billionaire. But Andrew Forrest isn’t just making rosy predictions—he’s contributing a whopping $740 million from his personal fortune to a fund that will help rebuild the nation. Announced on Thursday, the fund—called the “Ukraine Green Growth Initiative”—is expected to grow to a minimum of $25 billion and up to $100 billion. Forrest made his comments to Australia’s Nine newspapers, adding, “I don’t want to wait for the last bullet to be fired.” The fund is being likened to the Marshall Plan, a U.S.-backed initiative to help rebuild Western Europe after World War II (and, indirectly, to win the Cold War). But that U.S. initiative “started late, four years after the [war] ended, when there was devastation,” says Forrest, who is worth about $20 billion and founded Western Australia’s iron ore giant Fortescue Metals in 2003.

Another advantage to building the Ukraine fund now, he notes, is that it will “signal to the people of Ukraine and to the world that at the cessation of hostilities or the expulsion of Russian forces from the lands of Ukraine that they can invest straight away.” There will also be an opportunity to invest in more cutting-edge infrastructure, noted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday. Russia has destroyed large swaths of infrastructure, but much of it was outdated and built with little regard to the environment. “Andrew and I have agreed we will not replace communist-era rubbish Russian infrastructure, instead we will leapfrog to the latest technology,” Zelensky said in a statement. Forrest, speaking on ABC’s Radio National in Australia, added, “You will remember the German economic miracle, the Japanese economic miracle after World War II… Ukraine will have it faster. From sovereign funds to professional investors, institutions all over the world and in Australia, this would be a good investment.”

I agree with Mr. Forrest. Ukraine has everything necessary to become an economic powerhouse. Rewriting its laws to meet or exceed EU benchmarks, extremely rich soil for agriculture, and an educated populace who are very comfortable with digital environments.

they'd have to clamp down on their own corruption first.

Ukraine is meeting all EU/IMF reform benchmarks.
what benchmarks are possibly applicable in the middle of a war? The EU has nothing to do with this.
Open a book sometime.
my books tell me that of all the former soviet union states, ukraine is the only one that got poorer by PPP, and the reasons for this have only been exacerbated since the war, not better.

EU/IMF benhmarks that were being satisified before the Kremlin's February 2022 invasion.

You brought up corruption. Ukraine is an EU applicant nation.

It's not easy shedding over 100 years of Russian/Soviet/Russian domination.

Wonderful to hear about that large contribution by Mr. Forrest, refreshing to be reminded of how much of a positive outlook there is for Ukraine once Putin stops his deadly attacks on citizens and property. Thank you Mr. Forrest!

i'm sure the 2nd most corrupt nation in europe were honest in their reporting to the EU.

or perhaps their "benchmarks" are too low.
You brought up corruption.
because it's true. it hasn't gone away, and won't as long as they continue to allow fascists in their mainstream.
Ukraine is an EU applicant nation.
applying to the EU isn't the same as actually being in the EU, and the EU voices the same concerns i have pointed out. Ukraine corruption isn't a new thing, and reporting was unanimous on this until the war started.

apparantly, if your name isn't moldova, latvia, lithuania, east germany, estonia, or kazakhstan

Has Ukrainian Energy Expert, Hunter Biden, commented on what he'll do with all the money?

How much for The Big Guy?

You obviously don't understand how the modern world works. EU and IMF representatives are present in Kyiv and have carte blanche permission to poke around.
