Bill Barr Must Resign

The attorney general is working to destroy the integrity and independence of the Justice Department, in order to make Donald Trump a president who can operate above the law.

By Donald Ayer
Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General under George H. W. Bush

When donald trump chose Bill Barr to serve as attorney general in December 2018, even some moderates and liberals greeted the choice with optimism. One exuberant Democrat described him as “an excellent choice,” who could be counted on to “stand up for the department’s institutional prerogatives and … push back on any improper attempt to inject politics into its work.” At the end of his first year of service, Barr’s conduct has shown that such expectations were misplaced. Beginning in March with his public whitewashing of Robert Mueller’s report, which included powerful evidence of repeated obstruction of justice by the president, Barr has appeared to function much more as the president’s personal advocate than as an attorney general serving the people and government of the United States. Also quite unsettling was Trump’s explicit mention of Barr and Rudy Giuliani in the same breath in his July 25 phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky, as individuals the Ukrainian president should speak with regarding the phony investigation that Ukraine was expected to publicly announce. Still more troubling has been Barr’s intrusion, apparently for political reasons, into the area of Justice Department action that most demands scrupulous integrity and strict separation from politics and other bias—invocation of the criminal sanction. When Barr initiated a second, largely redundant investigation of the FBI Russia probe in May, denominated it criminal, and made clear that he is personally involved in carrying it out, many eyebrows were raised.

But worst of all have been the events of the past week. The evenhanded conduct of the prosecutions of Roger Stone and Michael Flynn by experienced Department of Justice attorneys have been disrupted at the 11th hour by the attorney general’s efforts to soften the consequences for the president’s associates. Bad as they are, these examples are more symptoms than causes of Barr’s unfitness for office. The fundamental problem is that he does not believe in the central tenet of our system of government—that no person is above the law. In chilling terms, Barr’s own words make clear his long-held belief in the need for a virtually autocratic executive who is not constrained by countervailing powers within our government under the constitutional system of checks and balances. His views on that point were set forth with breathtaking clarity in June 2018, in an unsolicited 19-page memorandum that Barr sent to then–Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, arguing that Mueller’s investigation of the president for obstruction of justice was fundamentally misconceived. The president “alone is the Executive Branch,” he wrote, and “the Constitution vests [in him personally] all Federal law enforcement power, and hence prosecutorial discretion.” (The emphasis is his.) Bill Barr’s America is not a place that anyone, including Trump voters, should want to go. It is a banana republic where all are subject to the whims of a dictatorial president and his henchmen. To prevent that, we need a public uprising demanding that Bill Barr resign immediately, or failing that, be impeached.

Amen. Petition: Attorney General Barr must resign

I don't believe anything the former federal judges say, or what anyone else has to say, the only thing that will stop this madness is when people get angry and protest by the thousands all over the country. But people aren't ready yet, the majority are still in the dark and ambivalent to politics. Things will only change when people are personally affected by something Trump does that affects their lives personally, like taking away their health insurance or mess with their Social Security. Historically, regimes in power have been overthrown because masses of people took to the streets demanding change. Iran, Hong Kong, Russia, France, Lebanon, Spain, Chile.... it seems the entire world is undergoing turmoil of one kind or another right now, and we're no different. What is the common denominator among all these countries? They're all protesting either for democracy or against authoritarianism, and they're protesting abuse of power.

Once the people in the US realize that they have to make a choice as to either take to the streets in protest or sit back and watch it all slide away, then maybe we'll see some changes in Washington. Once the GOP understands that people are not going to support their reelection, it doesn't matter how much money is poured into their reelection campaigns, people aren't going to stand for it anymore and run them all out of office.

Why do you believe that DOJ has any integrity or honor at all? Yes, I'm a cynical bastard, but it seems the record is clear that the FBI and DOJ are and have been political enforcers.

It's sad that Bernie Kerik and Eddie Gallagher are walking free, but it's more sad that so many citizens have again fallen for the nonsense of a demagogue and hold him in saintly status.

The DOJ certainly isn't a bastion of virtue, but Barr is shredding whatever credibility remains.

It's a very sad day then the POTUS pardons US war criminals.

The tread and topic reminds us of the old adage that while history does not repeat itself it sure does rhyme a lot.

So for Trump in the USA with its strong institutions and generally mild leaders public and private, civilian and military, the worse Trump makes things the worse Trump gets and the worse everything gets for everyone which is the salient point. It's everyone. While things will in fact get worse before they get better, Trump to date still hasn't been able to get past persecuting migrant immigrants while spinning his wheels against the FBI and the intelligence community.

Trump has moreover failed to vilify Muslims. His attacks on MSM are impotent babble as are his verbal assaults against Democrats who are not intimidated as we witnessed in the 2018 midterm and by the subsequent impeachment. Trump attacks the UCMJ but he won't remotely take on the generals and admirals active duty or retired and while Trump would love to put a number of retired generals and admirals in front of a court martial to try to silence all of 'em he can't get that past WH and foreign alien advisers he either trusts or is beholden to because they fear the Pentagon blowback across the armed forces at home and abroad.

USA civil-military relations have clear bonds from the Founding and while they remain uninitiated, ie, loose and amorphous, they are ripe for a coalescing which is the absolute worst eventuality for Putin-Trump & Rowers. A civil-military eventuality of oath takers is both real and powerful under the precepts and demands of the Constitution since Washington proposed the oath successfully at the Constitutional Convention to create the firewall of opposition and rejection should a tyrant leader crash his way into power. Washington's original concept that the military officer corps be the final bulwark against a tyrant leader has been expanded many times by Congress to the point that all federal and state employees and officers are oath takers who comprise that bulwark. With with USA civilian and military leaders from across society and the country joined and u

You do demand the removal of the Obama appointed federal judge who did what Trump demanded and reduced the sentencing to less than the mininum recommended, don't you?

You were provided many sources in the news. Barr himself is contemplating resigning.

Some folks are just too lazy to answer their own insipid questions.
