Very scary.....
PITTSBURGH -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition Monday afternoon, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital.

The player's agent, Leigh Steinberg, described the injuries to The Associated Press and said he did not know if there was further damage.

"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said before the operation. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."

ESPN.com's John Clayton has confirmed that Roethlisberger also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, has lost or chipped a number of teeth and has minor injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in.

Roethlisberger's mother, Brenda, was crying as she arrived at the hospital.

It amazes me that someone with the world in the palm of his hand could make such a bad decision. Riding a motorcycle is risky enough and probably not a smart move, but riding one WITHOUT A HELMET is just plain STUPID!

I'm praying that he fully recovers and can resume his amazing career.

It seems like it's another example of machismo taking precedent over intelligence...lot of that in America...maybe too much?

I'm sure he thought wearing a helmet would make him a sissy. Live and learn I guess.

I'm a Pittsburgher. This is a huge story here. Why the Government mandates seatbelt laws but lets motorcyclists go without a helmet is mindboggling. Just today I saw a guy on a motorcycle without a helmet doing wheelies on a major highway about 1 mile from where Big Ben crashed. Insane...

This isn't the first motorcycle accident for Big Ben. I love the man - but he should have it written in his contract that he can't engage in dangerous behaviors anymore. I guess that Super Bowl Ring makes you feel infallible....

Upon looking at the title of this thread I had pictures of clock all over the place in my head.

Just saw this on TV funnily enough. What an idiot. It's not like he was cruising along on a Harley either, that there is a Suzuki Hayabusa, a very fast bike, 180+mph I think. Fox had pictures of the accident scene, looks to me like he ran into a car at an intersection, the right side fender was smashed in, he must have hit it at speed. He'll probably get stung by his team for participating in dangerous non-football related activity.

Theres got to be a psychological reason for such behaviour in professional sportsmen, the footballers (that's soccer to you guys ;) ) over here are forever writing off Ferraris and Porsches in RTA's. I always feel such toys are wasted on them, they seem to have no appreciation of the capabilities of the vehicle and the associated responsibilities to other road users. Not that British drivers are models of good road manners, but still, just because you can afford a fast car or bike doesn't automatically make you qualified to drive/ride it.

 I thought the same thing because the title only said 'Big Ben in serious condition after...'

Even though I'd seen the news story I had no idea who big Ben is, I just saw a football player in an accident.

On the subject of the real Big Ben, there's maintainence going on at the moment so the chimes aren't working, just the bell itself.

It was such a serious accident that he required about 7 hours of surgery! Sounds like despite that he will be OK in the long term.

Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

The reason the Steelers and most teams don't put specific language into contracts about off-the-field accidents is that they don't feel it's necessary. The NFL Management Council has advised teams to use the phrasing "for any reason" in regards to a player who defaults on his contract because of an injury suffered outside of football.

Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition after seven hours of surgery that ended at approximately 9 p.m. ET, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mercy Hospital. His condition is not expected to change throughout the evening, Pituch said at a news conference.

"He suffered multiple facial fractures," Pituch said. "All of the fractures were successfully repaired. His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury. And there are no other confirmed injuries at this time."

Bottom line he will recover and should be ready to play this season and take the Steelers to another Super Bowl.....

Jack-a$$ should have had his helmet on. It's because of idiots like him that I have to pay extra for insurance.

Go Dolhpins

yeah, because he could have been killed. Thank god he can still throw.
You know, I am not a horrible human being, but thank god he can still play, because he has a lot of years left to go...the report I heard said he wasn't going to die...so thank god that his throwing arm wasn't injured!

I know, I was messing with ya.

Yeah, but he really doesn't deserve any sympathy from you, he is a dumb ***. How many others were not so lucky that same day?

If you are a steelers fan, it's good news.

But other than that, he took the first risk of riding a cycle, and the second risk of not protecting himself--I do not feel bad for him at this point.

Well, I am a closet steelers fan because I am a fan of the Bus because he went to Notre Dame and I am a huge ND fan.

And I actually just heard on ESPN (thank god my work puts it on along with CNN) that his knee might be injured.

Jackass is right, serves him right for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. I get a chuckle everytime I see someone who is anti-seatbelts/helmets get into an accident.

Go ahead Ben, get right back on that bike and don't wear a helmet, after all, you have the right to be an idiot...this is America after all!

Although I think the guy is a complete moron for not wearing a helmet, I don't agree with the assertion that people should have to legally wear a seat belt or helmet when driving or riding a motorcycle.

It all comes down to personal responsibility. And I always wear my seatbelt, I'm just saying it should be my choice if I do or not.

Then it should my choice whether or not I pay over priced insurance because of those that choose not to wear a helmet. Someone's "personal responsibility" sure has a lot to do with other riders bank accounts.

Yeah, I can't say I agree with it.

So you're OK with him riding without a helmet so long as he doesn't miss a game?

The bottom line is not that he will recover. The bottom line is that he acted like a moron and he's damn lucky he's alive no less able to contiue his career.

Do you remember Jason Williams the star basketball player from Duke who wrecked his motorcycle and his body. Big Ben is damn lucky he didn't suffer a similiar fate.

Not only is it frickin' stupid but consider the incredibly poor modeling a superstar QB has done for all of his young fans. The decision to ride a cycle without a helmet is just as bad as deciding to drive under the influence.

With all due respect, WRONG! Idiots like Big Ben cost you and me big bucks in higher insurance rates for driving and health care. If legislating morons to wear a seat belt and helmet save their lives it saves everyone else money it seems to me to be government doing their job.
