ACA Day is here again as the Affordable Care Act turns 13 today. If someone a decade ago had predicted that by this point the ACA would be stronger than ever and a Dem president would be itching to make the GOP's anti-ACA fervor a centerpiece of his re-election campaign, would it have seemed far-fetched?

Biden Marks Anniversary Of Obamacare Law That 'Changed America'
President Joe Biden on Thursday celebrated the 13th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, an expansion of government-subsidized health insurance that he said had "changed America" but is under threat from his Republican opponents.

Foreshadowing a major theme of what is expected to be his bid for a second term in 2024, Biden said he was working to lower costs in the notoriously expensive US healthcare system while fending off Republican pressure to cut government funding.

"Even now, MAGA Republicans in Congress are intent on repealing the Affordable Care Act," Biden told a White House celebration event, referring to the hard right wing of the Republicans led by former president and candidate for 2024 Donald Trump.

"It's clear it would have a devastating impact on the American people."
Biden tore into Republicans, saying the Trump wing had taken over and this is not "your father's Republican Party."

He noted the lack of Republican support for his recent expansion of healthcare subsidies through the Inflation Reduction Act and moves to use the purchasing power of state-run programs like Medicaid to push pharmaceutical giants into negotiating lower prices for medicines.

"For decades... we tried to take on Big Pharma, but we finally won," he said to cheers from the crowd of Democratic lawmakers and other supporters.

Folks are still waiting to keep their doctor as promised.

For people who were not working, but not old enough for medicare/medicaid, Obama care has been really the only viable option for health insurance.
I'm not sure that people realize how huge that is.

The online portal was fairly easy to follow, and they do a good job of trying to ensure if you qualify for discounts and such, that they factor all that in.

I think we have a ways to go still, insurance is still absurd in America, and healthcare is still to costly, and insurance still plays games with risk pools, etc. but we'll get there hopefully soon. I think if most people had to pay insurance outside of their company, their eyes would pop out of their head at the cost, and at how much it goes up every year. They would be much more inclined to view this as a problem, rather than currently where so many are insulated from the cost/outcome.

Just curious. Will the Gop vote to repeal again? They are nearing 300 votes to repeal.

Perfect is the enemy of better. And the ACA was very, very better.
How so? The point of the ACA was to take the wind out of the sails of medical providers who claimed that healthcare prices had to be so high to recover the cost of treating the uninsured and consequently force a decline in the cost of healthcare. The point was not to merely enrich health insurance companies.

Pretty half-hearted rendition of the old greatest hits.

Presumably they learned after 2018 that trying to repeal the ACA is political suicide.
Why not do the same for food, housing, clothing?

Aren't those necessities?

The debt will be 56 trillion by 2035 and Yellen calls that a reduction.

Obamacare was watered down Republicans, don't let that fact get lost in the shuffle.
Obama originally tried to work with Republicans, but was slow to realize what we now know without any doubt, that Republicans have no interest in significant bi-partisan legislation with a Democratic president because they fear it will help Democrats politically. So they keep watering Obamacare down, back and forth, back and forth, and eventually Democrats realized Republicans were never gonna support it no matter what.
At this point, Democrats ran out of time because of a number of unexpected changes in Representatives, and they lost their filibuster proof majority. As a result, they had to go with the watered down bill that had passed the Senate (?), and the modify the financials as much as they could with reconciliation.

Of course then Republicans cried and cried that it wasn't bipartisan.
Then they ran on repealing Obamacare, and couldn't muster enough to do it.

Republicans..it's why we can't have nice things in America with regards to our government.

13 years on and the ACA has still failed to deliver affordable healthcare.
Blame the capitalist insurance companies for those high rates and deductables. We could have had the public option or single payer.................

And it only took 10 plus years.
Yeah, MAGA are not bright folks just like the studies show.

Sorry, your rhetoric doesn't change the fact that Obamacare made my life better.
Made Americas worse. Congrats though. Good for you. Want me to pay your mortgage too?
