Biden approval drops to lowest of 7-month presidency after Taliban takeover

By Chris Kahn

NEW YORK, Aug 17 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's approval rating dropped by 7 percentage points and hit its lowest level so far as the U.S.-backed Afghan government collapsed over the weekend in an upheaval that sent thousands of civilians and Afghan military allies fleeing for their safety, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The national opinion poll, conducted on Monday, found that 46% of American adults approved of Biden's performance in office, the lowest recorded in weekly polls that started when Biden took office in January.

It is also down from the 53% who felt the same way in a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll that ran on Friday.

Biden's popularity dropped as the Taliban entered the capital, Kabul, wiping away two decades of U.S. military presence that cost nearly 1 trillion taxpayer dollars and thousands of American lives.

However, a majority of both Republican and Democratic voters said the chaos was a sign that the United States should leave.

A separate Ipsos snap poll, also conducted on Monday, found that fewer than half of Americans liked the way Biden has steered the U.S. military and diplomatic effort in Afghanistan this year. The president, who just last month praised Afghan forces for being "as well-equipped as any in the world," was rated worse than the other three presidents who presided over the United States' longest war.

The United States and Western allies continued to evacuate diplomats and civilians on Tuesday, one day after Afghans crowded into Kabul airport in a desperate attempt to flee the Taliban regime.

PFFFFFFFTTTTT.

It didnt "drop" with me, it shot up.

Steady as she goes Mr. President!! You're doing well!

The afghans had a decision to make, they made it. No longer our problem.

Nice job Mr. President! I am critical that he sent more back in, but I guess it became necessary to secure the airport and a few other areas since the so called "Afghan Army" didnt do it. Get em all out, and do it in days or weeks and not months please!

This is just the beginning. Much further Biden will drop.

Help me out here someone. As I understand it, a president w/ a zero approval rating is still president. Right?

I’d vote disapprove in a poll if asked at the moment. Doesn’t mean I’ll be lining up to vote for Trump/DeSantis in 2024.

Hard to believe he has a rating any higher than zero. You'd have to be an absolute moron to approve of this multi disaster President. I can't believe he topped the disaster at the border, but he blew it away with this one. Can't imagine how he could top this, but I don't put it past him.

This to shall pass.......?

Please dude, the decision to leave Afghanistan was 100% correct and the majority of Americans agree with it. It sucks that the Taliban took back control so easily, but ultimately that was out of Biden's hands.

I can pretty much guarantee you that as the economy continues to improve and covid begins to fade most people will come to their senses and won't even remember this shit. It sucks that it happened, but nobody seriously wants Republicans back in charge.

The situation in Afghanistan is not going to help his numbers, that's for sure.
Temporary drop & that is at 53. What were Trumps highest? No where close
It will be lost in the next election cycle

None of this would help Trump in a presidential election in 2024.

People will likely forgive and forget this tactical mistake involving the botched Afghan pullout.

They will never forgive and never forget Republican governors going out of their way to kill them with their idiotic anti mask policies and anti vax rhetoric.

Suddenly approval ratings matter 😂😂😂

Gosh, you are trying soooooo hard.

I'm not surprised. His approval rating absolutely should take a hit for the disastrous way this withdrawal has been handled.

On the big-picture strategy (i.e. ripping the bandaid off and withdrawing from Afghanistan), Biden's instincts are correct. But withdrawing security BEFORE the evacuation was a completely preventable catastrophe.

Agree

If the Afghanis wanted Democracy they would fight. Why should Americans put there lives at risk when the Afghanis are not willing.

We are no longer in the buisness of nation building.

Do you often take pleasure in America's failings?

Gosh, you are trying soooooo hard.

In the near future, hernia operations are going to be selling like hotcakes among the conservative set. Duct tape can only do so much.

Good time for a dip. It’s not like anyone is voting next week.

Given the relentless flood of negative comments by 'conservative' AM radio talk show hosts [One recently on a New York station called President of the United States of America Joseph Biden a traitor,] the numbers are not surprising. Regards, stay safe 'n well.

This baffles me. There was never going to be a good way to exit Afghanistan. The Taliban was always going to take power. The only thing Biden could have done better was to get our allies out quickly.

Biden is brave as hell to do this. It's sad that a president is taking a hit for ending a pointless war.

Meh, it's not like there is any other choice for 3 more years.
