The Biden administration plans to purchase 500 million doses of Pfizer coronavirus vaccine to distribute to other nations, significantly adding to its ongoing efforts to inoculate populations around the world, according to threepeople familiar with the plans.

The move by the U.S. government could lead to 200 million Pfizer doses being sent worldwide this year, followed by another 300 million across the first half of 2022, according to the individuals familiar with the plan.

Wow! Color me impressed! 500M doses!

I've long been saying Biden should take the helm here, and lead the world out of this mess. Use our pharmaceutical manufacturing might, form a coalition, and start saving the world. Let's get back some of the gravitas & leadership we had in the decades after the War (IWW-II).

I'm pretty stoked, here. And, damn proud. After previous four years, this is just what we need! Good going, Joe & crew! (y)

This might be a highly cost effective use of soft power, and for the price, there may not be a more bang-for-the-buck way to give China the finger when it comes to winning hearts and minds in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America.

I'd really want to understand the price tag for firming up an opinion, however.

I see nothing but 'win-win' everywhere!

That's a fair & reasonable concern, IMO.

But, it's in our own best interest to do it. The global economy and our part in it, is dependent upon it. And we don't want to face additional mutant blow-back. And then least, is the lives saved & suffering avoided.

Yes, it's a nice gesture. I'm sure if Trump were still in office he would have done the same. Not sure what you mean by "after the previous four years, this is just what we need" ....

It was Trump who ordered enough vaccine for our country, and Biden built on it after taking office.

From Factcheck...

"a Government Accountability Office report, released on Jan. 28, said in a footnote that updated information from the vaccine companies and the Department of Defense “indicate there are at least one billion vaccine doses under contract as of January 2021. Moreover, the government may acquire additional doses through the exercise of options or execution of new agreements.”

Biden fudged the truth when he said this:
“Just over four weeks ago, America had no real plan to vaccinate most of the country,” Biden said, going on to say his predecessor “failed to order enough vaccines, failed to mobilize the effort to administer the shots, failed to set up vaccine centers. That changed the moment we took office.”

We’ll start with the claim that the Trump administration hadn’t ordered “enough vaccines.” As we’ve written before, the federal government, as of Dec. 31, had contracted to buy at least 800 million COVID-19 vaccine doses with delivery by July 31. Those doses included vaccines from four companies who have not yet received FDA authorization.

So let's be clear, the Trump administration had clearly ordered “enough” vaccine doses for the U.S. population."

I'm reffering to the previous four years of often withdrawing from the world.

But this is no 'gesture'. It saves lives, negates suffering, saves the global economy and our place in it, and guards against future mutant blow-back. And then not least, it enhances are stature in the world.

Edit: I have no faith Trump would have done this. He might sell the doses. But, I have no confidence he would do what Biden is doing.

"I would like you to do us a favor, though..."

It just makes sense. Viruses know no borders.

Vaccine diplomacy! And a president who understands that the virus and the economy are inextricably linked.
Well stated, on both accounts!

If it's healthcare policy, you're the man - Greenbeard!

The U.S has vaccine stockpiles because of Trump. The U.S. has faced increasing pressure to donate/sell to the rest of the world under the Biden admin.

Of course, the anti-Trumps are going to say Trump would not share with the world... It's political to do so.

Are we talking about the same Donald Trump? Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of this instinctual anti-everything-Trumpers. I like Space Force, think we need stronger borders and I think he should get credit for funding Warp Speed. (Even if he completely pissed away any goodwill from that with just-a-flu, gone-by-April, masks-are-bad, inject-bleach and on and on and on...)

But he would have given away vaccines? To foreigners? In countries with.... brown and black people?! For Free?!!! I don't think we're talking about the same person. Norway, sure. Perhaps Russia and North Korea as well. But, certainly not 500M doses all around the world.

How are the stockpiles, 'because of Trump'?

Pfizer, the most predominate vaccine, and the one Biden is donating, had nothing to do with Warp Speed! And in fact, they (Pfizer) were first to market before any Warp Speed products. You give Trump too much credit. The credit belongs to the vaccine manufacturers.

Of course, the anti-Trumps are going to say Trump would not share with the world... It's political to do so.

All we can do is go by Trump's past behaviour. Maybe, he changed since he got out of office? I doubt it.

Read my o/p... Factcheck states he had billions of doses on order under contract.
Where do you think the stock piles originated? Hint, not under Biden as he falsely claimed.

I'm not sure what's the hype with Warp Speed. Pfizer, the by far predominate vaccine, the one that Biden is exporting, was not part of Warp Speed. It aslo was the first solution to market, before the Warp Speed products.

So, what's the big deal? What am I missing, here?

Don't get me wrong, I think he was an absolute net-negative when it came to COVID e.g. we would have had better net outcomes if a monkey with drums was sitting in the Oval Office and everyone else had to carry the load. He whiffed on virtually every COVID-related claim and promise he made during his tenure, until November when he stopped making promises and checked out altogether.

However, the scale-up machine for vaccine manufacturing kicked into high gear under his watch and I have no issue recognizing that. I also have friends at a couple of the large pharmaceuticals who've told me it was widely accepted that federal support greased the wheels to scale up production. There is plentiful press and other records to back that up. So I don't have a problem giving him that kudos for making that call, even if it was a call a typical 6th grader would have made as well.

I just wish he hadn't had blown that one good thing with the many dozens of lies, mistruths and other outright bad decisions.

My memory is he under-ordered, leaving Biden to clean-up. And Warp Speed failed, trailing the free-market solutions. I'm not sure Warp Speed was anything more than the usual Trump hyperbolic B.S., taking credit for others' efforts.

But, I will look at your link.

Ok 500M @ ~$2,000 a pop = $1,000,000,000,000
Now add that to the Dem-Rep Monopolies Stellar handling of US Tax money and what do you get ?

"This is just What we Need" ? What to make the US insolvent ?
This will lead to war. It not "oh I can claim Bankruptcy and all is forgiven ! China owns our Debt, they are going to be more like
how The Mob deals with people who can pay.

Other wealthy countries need to step up as well. It's in our interest, and it's the right thing to do.

Pfizer doses are $20 US a dose. So the cost is 4 billion this year.

shhhhh... there are opportunities here!

@NoMoreDems-Reps by the way I'm selling an early 2010s laptop in decent working condition. It's yours for only $14,000. A bargain by any measure, as I'm sure you'd agree. Interested?

OK joking but seriously, $1,000 a dose is one heck of a vaccine. For that price, I'm expecting immunity from obesity, vampires and zombie apocalypses.

Alright, I read your source.

It's pretty much as I remember. Trump's ordering fell short, at least in terms of vaccines getting approval. So, it seems they did blow it.

Here's what your source said, in response to Biden needing to order more to make-up for Trump's deficit;

It’s worth noting that the Trump administration could have increased its order with Pfizer and Moderna as well. The U.S. government announced its initial agreement with Pfizer in July, contracting for 100 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine once it was approved. That agreement included an option to acquire an additional 500 million doses from Pfizer.

And that's exactly what I remember. Trump didn't order enough of the successful vaccines, and Biden cleaned-up the mess.

And no, according to your source Trump didn't order 'billions' of vaccines. He ordered 800M, many of which were from the manufacturers that didn't get authorized. He ordered only 100M each from Pfizer & Moderna, and Biden subsequently increased that number to an adequate amount.

So it comes down to, 'Do we fault Trump for ordering on paper 800M vaccines, most of which didn't pan out? I really don't know. But what is clear, is Biden fixed the problem, righting the ship and leaving us the envy of the world.

Biden fudged the truth when he said this:

First, Trump didn’t order enough vaccines. He was offered it by Pfizer but declined.
Second, Trump is transactional. He never would just give something away without getting something else in return.
