Finnish court detains Biafran separatist leader suspected of terrorism
Biafra is back, baby.
Well not really.
Let's introduce you to the curious case of Simon Ekpa. He was born 1985 in Ohaukwu in Ebonyi State in Nigeria. He was actually an athlete in his youth and has a silver medal from the 2003 African Junior Athletic Championship,. Since 2007 he has lived in Lahti, Finland, he became a citizen, and did military service in 2013. He joined Finnish local politics and the NCP party (the main liberal- conservative party), and he is elected as a Councillor on the Municipal Council, and sits on the public transport committee in his hometown of Lahti. He is also a the head of the "Biafra Republic Government in Exile", but that is something he appointed himself to, there is no other members of that government in exile than himself. He used to not really getting along with the official Biafran opposition, the IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra), but since IPOB was dissolved last year, he has more or less occupied the space as the Biafran voice online.
None of this is of course illegal. You are allowed to call yourself Grand Poobah de Doink of All of This and That if you want to. However he is suspected to have promoted action that led to violcence against civilian in former Biafra in August 2021, this was about the same time he loudly protested the arrest of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu (an arrest that presumably happened in Kenya, but he was quickly extradited to Nigeria). Kanu had tried to start an illegal militia in southeastern Kenya.
So where is this going? I have no clue, police has also arrested four other individuals suspected of funding terrorism. But I have to say, the last thing I expected when reading Finnish news, was a Biafran separatist being in Lahti.
