Musharraf linked Benazir’s security to her ties with him

The US intelligence agencies taped Benazir Bhutto`s phone calls, prior to her arrival in Pakistan, in a bid to "play under-the-table, cut-throat games more effectively", a new book has revealed.

"The Way of the World" authored by a Pulitzer Prize winning US journalist Ron Suskind, is full of disclosures, with its fair portion about Musharraf-Benazir conversation including Musharraf`s quote "You should understand something, your security is based on the state of our relationship".

Suskind writes that Benazir Bhutto`s case of returning to Pakistan was strongly backed by Condoleezza Rice-led State Department and equally opposed by Vice President Dick Cheney who considered Bhutto "complicated and unpredictable".

I didnt know that we where spying on her before she got shot... Ermmmmm. I mean bombed.
YouTube - Benazir Bhutto, you can see the gunman shooting at her

Its kinda sad how she was telling Americans how she needs to be able to be protected, but yet because of the situation we put them in where they can't make their own laws and she cant run around with security. And we cant protect her because if someone kills her it might drag Americans into something unneeded. So she just dies.

What exactly is your objection here?

That we . . . spy on people? In general?

The United States is an enemy to foreign democracy, especially in places like the Middle East; back in the Cold War it was Latin America. A death squad-run fascist dictatorship is infinity more useful to our interest and foreign policy than a democracy in such places.

Disagree. "We" have no control over what "our" spies do.
Who do you think puffed her burkha?

Any nation with a competent intelligence service(s) harvests information from around the globe.

As far as Benizir Bhutto, I would imagine that at the very least the US, UK, and India kept tabs on her. That's to say nothing of Pakistan's own ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) which wanted her gone.

When I first read about her going back....I knew she was going to be killed. It's sad really. But I didn't know she was being spied on either. That's really creepy to think about.

U.N. to launch Bhutto death investigation - CNN.com

The United Nations is working to establish a commission to investigate the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, whose death came one year ago Sunday.
"The secretary-general is hopeful that, with the progression of the discussions, the commission could be established in the near future," said a statement issued by the office of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
