I prefer US made goods because they're of superior quality. The disputes over these islands have been ongoing, and I've followed it generally for some years - but only through press releases until recently. I'm not a hawk. I do believe that perhaps a show of resolve now could foster a just resolution of all the conflicting claims and avoid a potentially far more serious conflict later. Over half of the world's shipping passes through those waters. No single nation should control that water way. If we allow that - and by "we" I include all of the the nations directly and indirectly affected (which is huge) - then a far more serious situation may develop over which US influence will mean little. It will affect all of the Asian subcontinent and the western Pacific as well as the already inflamed ME.
The Philippines submitted 3,000 pages rebutting China’s claim that an international body does not have the jurisdiction to decide on Manila’s South China Sea complaints. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said the supplemental documentation had been submitted to the Permanent Court of Arbitration on Monday.
China has refused to official participate in the case, saying it does not accept international arbitration over the South China Sea disputes. However, Beijing did openly release a position paper making clear its objections to the arbitration process. In particular, China argued that the arbitral tribunal does not have the jurisdiction to decide the case. Beijing also rebutted Manila’s arguments that China’s nine-dash line claim in inconsistent with the principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

without showing sufficient cause for such failure, the arbitral tribunal may proceed with
the arbitration.

within the established period of time, without showing sufficient cause for such failure,
the arbitral tribunal may make the award on the evidence before it.
if this shipping lane is so vital to the world, then perhaps the world should assert its influence and let China know that shipping will continue through that region regardless of who claims the islands. the US should not be expected to take the lead in every global pissing match.
The lane is that important. I agree that we shouldn't get involved in some of that which we are, but this is a situation in which we should be involved.
so what do you propose? what are we going to do, and what's the rest of the world going to do to help keep this vital lane open? what does the plan look like?
The US Navy will conduct "freedom of navigation operations" just as they have for decades.
so what do you propose? what are we going to do, and what's the rest of the world going to do to help keep this vital lane open? what does the plan look like?
Exactly how that is done I'll leave to professionals who do that for a living.
yes, we already know that you support escalation and that you aren't even willing to change your purchasing habits in order to support the effort. i'm wondering what humbolt supports, which is why the post was addressed to humbolt.
I'm reluctant to use such language, but you're actually lying. Continuing operations we have conducted in that area for over 50 years is not escalation.
so you don't support escalation? cool. neither do i. neither does anyone else. too much money would be lost. i also don't support bellicose rhetoric, chest thumping, or dick measuring contests.
The US will continue as we have done for more than 50 years. Any escalation will be on the Chinese.
We are richer, stronger and we have more opportunities because of normalized trade with China.
Unless you own one of these outsourced companies so you are not richer. The Chinese did not ship any jobs over here so I do not see how we have more opportunities.
As a long term student of China you must understand "their" view of the role of China in the world and get off the "commies conquering the world" concept. China has a goal of ruling the Pacific region, including the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Viet Nam, etc. That is not to say "invade" those regions but to control the areas. They are currently constructing islands as bases for missiles to discourage countries like America of clashing with them in "their" territory as they spread their influence.
