This is apropos of nothing, but I'm curious to hear opinions (also, this just happened to me, and I'm slightly pissed about it). I'm mostly interested in hearing from men on this issue, as women will never have to deal with this in remotely the same way. Here's the hypothetical:

You go to a bar. You sit down at the bar with your date/friend/significant other/whatever. You order drinks, chat, etc. You go outside for whatever reason (in my case, to have a cigarette and chat with the girl I was with). When you get back inside, someone has ignored the fact that you have a mostly full drink in front of the seat at which you used to be sitting (with a cocktail napkin on top of it - the universal sign that this spot, and this drink, are spoken for), and is blocking your access to the seat that you have rightfully claimed. You politely point this out and are ignored. What do you do?

Trying to think this through: Maybe try stepping into their line of sight and look them square in the eye and say "I am sure you must not have heard me a moment ago, what with all the chatter and noise. Would you please stand aside and let me retake my seat?" Make it impossible to be ignored is what I am thinking.

That's good advice. I actually tried that, and the dude literally would not make eye contact, and entirely ignored what I said to him.

Only solution: bar fight.

Get the bouncer to handle it. He gets paid to keep order.

Pull him off the bar stool and kick him in the ribs. Give a quick look to his buddy with your hand on your knife.

Then assuming the bouncer doesn't toss you out, you get to sit back down and enjoy your drink... until the guy comes back in with a shotgun and blows your brains out onto the back wall, ruining the bar's collection of Elvis memorabilia.

(If you get into a fight at a bar, you leave afterward. Hanging around after a fight has gotten many a young man killed.)

put your hand on his shoulder, while you verbally excuse your need to get past him
and sit down

I don't spend a lot of time in bars, but that seems to be the point where a shoulder bump and maybe an elbow in the ribs is an appropriate escalation of force.

This is, again, a demonstration of the need for control all over the place, because there are so many a$$holes in this world. A reasonable type of control, in this case, would be a bouncer (with common sense) telling him "give this guy his seat back or I'm going to throw your a$$ out of here!"

Then assuming the bouncer doesn't toss you out, you get to sit back down and enjoy your drink... until the guy comes back in with a shotgun and......

...I draw my concealed and kill him.

Jesus wtf does a guy have to do around here just to enjoy a few drinks with a buddy in peace?

Drink at home, or don't go to redneck joints and start barfights because someone is in your way.
