Q&A: Nir Rosen on Syria's armed opposition - Features - Al Jazeera English
Excerpt: "AJ: Who are the fighters - army defectors, armed civilians or "armed gangs"?
NR: The issue of defectors is a distraction. Armed resistance began long before defections started. While fighters are often portrayed in the media as defectors from the Syrian military, the majority are civilians who have taken up arms. The opposition believes it will have more legitimacy if fighters are dubbed "defectors", and described collectively as the Free Syrian Army.
They are also not armed gangs, as the regime and its supporters describe them. They are much more akin to a popular armed struggle or an insurgency. In fact, many Syrian revolutionaries use the term muqawama, ["resistance"] to describe themselves. This I find particularly ironic, as the Syrian regime and its supporters champion "resistance" (to Israel and the West) as the reason for their legitimacy, and the reason why they are being targeted by an alleged "foreign conspiracy" in the form of this uprising."
Apparently, as the FSA has been fighting with the Al Nusar front.
Syrian Opposition Call for No-Fly Zone, 8 October 2011
Proof?
Your point? How does that change the number of fighters?
Also the part about Syria breaking down into 3 regions put that into perspective. As what part of the Civilians are backing who.
The fact that you didn't check out those links with what was said and concerning sources......shows us what again?
Oh did you need something more liberal like to chew on when it comes to The Rebels/Terrorists.
The fact that you didn't know whats up.....leaves you where now? Weren't you saying something about Numbers?
Desperation?????.....not even if it was on your Life!!!!! <yawn>
Al Nusar is still outnumbered.
From your own link.
According to the SFA, 12,000 soldiers have joined their ranks, with 18 brigades set up in various Syria cities.
“But there will be no reprisals, as we also have Alawites in our ranks who oppose the [Bashar] al-Assad regime,” he added. <<<<<Only validation is a Sunni Rebel.....got anything else on any Alawites going against Assad?
Did you still need to see the links on how Al Nusra and others are Fighting the FSA and do you need the link with the FSA Commander saying that when Al Nusra comes they give them what they want.
Also as to who the Civilians are backing who that also was just put up in post 175.
Five years from now as we get ready to wage war in the next middleeastern country...And I never said you did.
What happened with Afghanistan and Osama Bin Laden was a series of un-foreseeable coincidences and circumstances that were far beyond out control.
Syria is not being invaded by communist forces. We know who the bad guys are.
We know who the bad guys are this time, honest.
That I don't need to link spam with every post?
I'll take what's accurate, thank you.
That's funny, because your own link says: " But most of Nusra’s fighters joined the group for the weapons, not the ideology, he said, and some left after discovering the Qaeda connection.
“Most of the youth who joined them did so to topple the regime, not because they wanted to join Al Qaeda,” he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. "
Good thing its not.
Yes, thank you. I kno
Again, from your link "But most of Nusra’s fighters joined the group for the weapons, not the ideology, he said, and some left after discovering the Qaeda connection.
“Most of the youth who joined them did so to topple the regime, not because they wanted to join Al Qaeda,” he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation."
Do you have anything to refute his claim?
Um, what exactly are you asking? I have the links that show the FSA fighting with the Al Nusra front.
Civilians will back who ever can shield them better.
Yes, Assad forces and Al Nusra militants.
Assad tells Obama to stop arming rebels or no deal
This is a no win situation for the US. If we help the rebels, we risk the extremists coming in.We should just mind our own business for once.
It would be wonderful if our government would live by this motto, but noooooooooooooooo... our active little Socialists believe our business is their business... and these pimps/parasites do everything in their power to make us their little prostitutes.I agree that minding your own business is usually a good idea.
Right I doubt you can call the AP, Rueters, and the UPI or the NY Times as Spam.
You can deflect away as much as you like about who has the Support. You have been shown.
w you know who is making the money and who is not. Within the Rebels/Terrorists. Also now you know about those so called numbers you were talking about.
Moreover.....we now have Al Nusras own words.
Plus they have increased their Numbers since they became the Dominate Fighting force out of all the Opposition.
Is this enough proof for you yet? Or do you still blindly support King Obama?
Yes you know about AL Nusra being out numbered by themselves as their own Organization
but then those numbers have all increased due to all their success.
Again we have Al Nusra's own words now and we know they are Aligned with AQ. Separate of AQ too. Plus we also now know they have clerics and lawyers dispensing Sharia Law in the land and holding Court. So much for what you were trying to use about who joined Al Nusra in the beginning.
Do you have anything to back up the Rebel/Terrorist's claim. See the UN has stated that 6 times the Rebels have accused Assad of Chems. Which the UN knows 4 of those times the Rebels lied. We also have the Rebels lying about numbers killed, that they don't assassinate prisoners, plus their big lie on that they didn't use Chems. Plus they don't attack Christians. So we do know they aren't very truthful.
So trying to use one of the Rebels saying there are Alawaites in the Opposition. Isn't validating that there are Alawaites in the Opposition. None are listed. So if you have some sort of link showing Alawites have defected to the Rebels/ Terrorists. Sure would appreciate you giving us something of substance.
Do you have the links showing the Rebels fighting each other?
Yeah civilians back up who can shield them better. How come that isn't the FSA and their SNC?
When you have a lightweight by the balls... just squeeze a little harder to make it sterile. Yes... Obama has the US might behind him, but as Secretary of State Smaller than a Pin Prick admitted, there is no testosterone behind thems dings. Put-In and Basher Asshat have president Numb Nuts by the balls and are dragging him around like a rag doll. He's being dragged around by his lead from his behind.
I don't even recognize a King Obama.
And please, your arguments are a bunch of YT videos? That's...something.
I want some of what your taking to see all that. Fact is Putin and Assad are toeing the line after huffing and puffing. BushII isn't in office so your confusing your Presidents when it comes to numb nuts. Some CONS just can't stand it, the chemical weapon crisis is being defused without a simpering snickering fool in charge...
Now when it comes to going in or staying out CONS are demanding we greatly increase our arming the rebels. I watched Senator Bob Corker R-Tenn demand we greatly increase the weapon flow to the rebels... seems to me Cons are all over the chart on what they think is best.
At this point President Obama is firmly in the driver's seat, and oh how the CONs are screaming....
On the eve of the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Barack Obama made the strongest possible case for the use of force against Bashar Assad’s Syrian regime. But it wasn’t a very strong case. Indeed, it was built on a false premise...
The President knows this, which makes his words and gestures during the weeks leading up to his Syria speech all the more perplexing.
He willingly jumped into a bear trap of his own creation.
In the process, he has damaged his presidency and weakened the nation’s standing in the world.
It has been one of the more stunning and inexplicable displays of presidential incompetence that I’ve ever witnessed.

Obama is firmly in the driver's seat, but of which car? The YUGO with no steering wheel or brakes? The one being towed by others of questionable motives and character? I'll let Joe Klein examine the escaped goo from Obama's Depends. Joe Klein... basically Debbie Wasserman Schultz with a little more polish, mixes fact with pretty-please "Hope". For him and others to write and state what they have of President Incompetent... they had little choice... everyone was watching the goo slowly seep from the pant leg across the floor and being flung about as Obama made his... Exh-it... Staage Leehft. That was being as diplomatic as a propagandist can be when everyone knows he flunked it big time.
Laughing, oh the CONvoluted hot mess the hyper partisans have to dredge up to try and spin down a major policy success that doesn't have thousands of troops pouring into Syria with a snickering Wannabee Cowboy drawling 'with us or agin us' crap.
it ain't a Yugo and ya know it. It is the threat of the largest Navy in the world. Look how quickly Putin is backing down from 'defending' Syria with more Roosian ships to a fast frame work for removing Chemical Weapons.
As for the cartoons, I'm sure some CONs are popping chubbies but like the polls predicting Willard was going to win the Presidency- not very accurate...
But all the CONs can do right now is rant and wail, draw little pictures and pretend they are photographs....

Are you among those who act as though the belief is that if it did not show on tv then it's not real??

Yeah. So, no, in fact, you are not able to demonstrate how a strike against Assads' IADs and CW networks would inflame the whole region in war?
The threat comes from Russia and Iran.
In that case, maybe you could quote exactly where Putin said what you and the OP claim.......
