Since taking office, the Trump administration has issued orders that threaten to broadly undercut the financial foundation of university based research, including deep reductions in overhead cost reimbursements through the National Institutes of Health. Court challenges have paused some of the cuts, but universities are bracing for uncertainty. The University of Pennsylvania could face a $250 million hit in N.I.H. funding alone.

Members of the administration have cast the cuts as a way to reduce wasteful government spending, sometimes in political terms. Last month, Katie Miller, who is working with Elon Musk’s team to trim federal spending, said the cuts would end “liberal D.E.I. deans’ slush fund.”

At U.C. San Diego, which was already facing state budget cuts, Dr. Cooper, the biology professor, said the fallout would have repercussions beyond universities if fewer students passed through their programs, and could affect entire sectors of the economy.
“The bigger issue in all this is that, this is our future biomedical work force,” she said.

"I love the poorly educated. We're the smartest people."

Happy MAGA.

Intellectuals, artists, and all "free thinkers" must be silenced when authoritarian dictatorships take control. It has always been this way. You can' have people getting contrary ideas. That can be costly and destabilizing to the regime. Therefore, universities must be brought to heel by whatever means necessary.

Negative focus on individuals in any group seems to reinforce the trend to herd instinct against danger which gathers the ignorant, the stupid and the willfully contrary. When these lower(ed) intellect members of the herd get spooked for any reason, real or imagined, then the herd tightens, becomes super defensive and use any and all means to make the perceived danger go away. They become super dangerous without reason and with sharply reduced intelligence. This is what the Maga has morphed into through the machinations of the t Rump and reflexes of its opposition. What is most dangerous by far is the sliding with fascism into the horrors of naziism by the right wing with a select few actually understanding that the underlying beliefs of the right have become dark and horrible. Then, the right's more enlightened also become a threat to the herd. If this trend continues and enlarges even yet, then the USA will become thoroughly self destructive and will easily slide into civil and world war. The t rump MUST be stopped.
