Arrests made after more than a thousand protest Ann Coulter speech | US news | The Guardian

Six to seven were arrested during the far-right pundit’s event at University of California, Berkeley campus on Wednesday night

More than a thousand young protesters linked arms and tried to physically block people from entering a speech by the far-right pundit Ann Coulter at the University of California, Berkeley campus on Wednesday night.

Rows of students chanted “Go home Nazis!”, “Shame!” and “You’re not getting in”, while behind them, hundreds of law enforcement officers, many in riot gear, guarded the building where Coulter was slated to speak.

I have several different views of Ann: 1), she's a truck driver in drag. Just look at her prominent Adam's apple.; 2) She's a Nazi or some other fascist who just makes her money by inflaming crowds.

we're kinda going through the 60s again.

our kids and grand kids will have to clean up the political mess of Limbaugh/Hannity/Trump.

Ironic that this takes place at Berkeley, the home of the Free Speech Movement.

Yeah, but not like that. Kids from the 60s were fighting for free speech...not against it.

Those "students" are our future politicians, judges, journalists, etc.

May God have mercy on this nation!

butt hurt bitches crying because someone doesn't think like them.

Candy asses

But it's not quite so cut & dried. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement sprang forth from the local Civil Rights Movement, so while the students were then protesting for free speech, the speech they were advocating was in fighting against hate and xenophobia, some of the things perceived of Ann Coulter. So this is pretty complex.

Here's a picture of Mario Savio in his defining moment on the surrounded cop car, with the cops and Jack Weinberg still inside. I have no idea how Weinberg dealt with being stuck in that backseat for multiple days!

they were fighting a corrupt establishment and what they just did was exercise their free speech.

Except in the 60's at least the Left tried to appear to respect Free Speech instead of using Fascist Tactics to deny the Free Speech of political opponents.

wow

I'm of the opinion that censoring free speech is not free speech.

Great job jumping into the cheap sexual identity pit. Really gives your arguments gravitas; that and it's been used for decades.

But thanks for demonstrating the high respect free speech is accorded by UC Bezerkley. And you as well.

wow

Although never perfect the only time the US establishment is at it's most corrupt is when Big Govt Leftist are running the show.

Yeah, how did he go to the bathroom? lol

It's my understanding that the free speech movement arose when the students weren't allowed to participate in off campus political activities. Now look at them, they don't even want free speech on their campus.

That was exactly what I implied, but didn't directly say! :2razz:

I seem to remember the cops did shift changes, and everyone in the car was brought nourishment. But they never let Weinberg out, that I'm aware! Gotta' be rough in hot weather!

Yep. What the hell?

Any doubts about the Progressives views on the Constitution should certainly be put to rest.

She's not a good person, but the crowd needs to calm the **** down here.

I think Coulter is well worth protesting, but blocking people's entrance is going too far.

I think it very possible that some of the "Protest" is orchestrated by the right to play up the poor victimized provocateurs like Coulter and Trump Jr.

I would be curious to hear one statement ever made by Ann Coulter that was profound, useful, or even interesting? She's a **** stirrer and makes a fortune doing it.

She definitely says racist stuff, like she is worried about the browning of America. I am sure she got the attention she wanted. Thousands of people getting arrested probably makes her super happy

Hey, look what I found! First hand accounts of the entire incident - including from Weinberg!

I made the acquaintance of the man in the car and shook hands: "Hi." "Hi, how are ya." He didn't pay much attention to me and I didn't pay much attention to him. He was a somewhat incidental guy to the whole thing. Just the guy in the car. Out of fear that the police would hustle Jack away in the small hours, many of us stayed around the car all the time. Bringing up a subject that every single one of us had thought about, Mario humorously made the point that if we were to succeed, we'd better stick around:

This car's here. It's been here for a long time. I'm gonna request that they bring Jack a chamberpot. You know these things, right? (Laughter and applause.) This car, I hope, if you stay sittin' here, is gonna stay here all night, and as long tomorrow morning as necessary! All night, this car's gonna be here, is that right?! (Cheers, applause, "Yeah! Yeah!")

After the first few hours, I figured it might be a long haul and decided not to eat. I do remember being told I could go into Sproul Hall for a **** with a promise I could come back to the car. But it seemed to me it was a trick, and so I refused.[2]

Good find. I'd like to say it brings back fond memories but it was a bit before my time. So I can only imagine...which is something I used to do for a living. I love looking at old pictures and imagining what it must've been like.

The cop in the third photo bears a remarkable resemblance to Putin, don't you think? lol

Hah! We're seeing Putin everywhere! But the resemblance is there, I will admit.

I must admit I too love older pictures, trying to get a context for the time. I especially like stuff from the pre-hippie days, when many seemed to try to dress with more dignity. And everyone is thin! I can date American pictures from this era by noting if the men are wearing hats. If the men are predominately wearing hats, it's the very early sixties or earlier. If they're predominately hat-less, it's probable in the sixties or later. And if the picture's colour, it's probably in the seventies or later.

If you like pictures of individuals in an urban environment (mostly Chicago) during the 50's & 60's, you may take an interest in Vivian Maier's work. She has an amazing knack for getting pictures of interesting individuals on the city streets doing ordinary things. You just can't help but wonder what her subjects' lives are like.

Here's a link to some of her work, and you can Wiki her to find out more about her. If you like her work, I do encourage you to Wiki her because she & her work have an interesting story - especially in how both her & her work recently became discovered!

Yes, I'm familiar with Vivian Maier...what a life. I saw the documentary about her. Kinda sad that she didn't get to see many of her own photos, though. Have you heard of Diane Arbuss? Her work is um, how you say...different. lol Her photos left an indelible mark on how I see people in general...especially on the east coast. It's real, man. Real, real.

Yup, I can usually date people by their fashion and hairdo's, too. Lately, I've been watching some old American Bandstand and Soul train videos just for the hell of it. The shows are a lot more boring than I remember them. But the kids on Soul Train really dressed nice...danced better, too. American bandstand...meh.
