LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Officials say Arkansas’ new Ten Commandments monument was destroyed by someone driving a vehicle into it less than 24 hours after the monument was placed on state Capitol grounds.

Secretary of State’s Office spokesman Chris Powell says Capitol Police arrested the male suspect early Wednesday. The suspect’s name and motive haven’t been released.

The stone monument fell to the ground and broke into multiple pieces.

The privately funded monument was 6 feet tall (1.8 meters) and weighed 6,000 pounds (2,721 kilograms). It was installed Tuesday morning on the southwest lawn of the Capitol with little fanfare and no advance notice. A 2015 law required the state to allow the display near the Capitol, and a state panel last month gave final approval to its design and location.

they were recently doing something similar to monuments down south here recently, monuments that had been in place for many decades

I guess intolerance gets around ........




one has to wonder, why would a 'religious' sculpture be allowed to be permanently displayed on government property?

that could be construed as the state endorsing religion.

separation of church & state ...........

Jesus, less that 24 hours and there was no advance warning of it being put up? Either the suspect knew in advance or is a very quick minded individual. Regardless of the religious nature, this is a blatant case of destruction of public property and I'm sure the court appearances will be swift.

I believe the article states it was someone in a car. But that's quite the turnaround on vandalism, less than 24 hours with something that had no prior notice.

Well the guy has been caught and can be appropriately charged.
 

The Ten Commandments are common sense and good advice. The main disagreement seems to be over lusting after your neighbors wife neighbors wife. :lol:

They are the foundation of modern law.

May be it was some out of his mind drunk and not some hateful atheist who had his feelings hurt.
 

I am only shocked by how fast it happened. Atheists can be as passionate about opposing religious monuments as Catholics can be about building them. I wonder if the suspect's motives were antireligious or proconstitution. Either way their actions violate the state law and there are legal avenues to implement if they were offended. One article said he recorded himself while he drove the vehicle into the monument too; wonder if he was planning Youtube or something
 


Let's keep religion out in the woods around a bonfire where it belongs

There are only 3 commandments that are laws; murder, steal and false witness. So, not quite the foundation of modern law at all.
 

The monument may have been privately funded, but it was publicly displayed. I don't agree with a citizen taking the law into his own hands, but government ought not to favor one religion over another. Why do governments insist on getting themselves into these situations?
 

Which was always intended to keep the gov't out out of the Church, not the Church out of the gov't. I'm, sorry that you've been indoctrinated with a lie to the contrary, but that is the simple truth.

Religion has a vast array of appropriate areas, just not on government grounds (unless you have all religions; it comes of as endorsing a religion). Freedom of religion is a constitutional right, and doesn't need to be hidden 'out in the woods around a bon fire'.
