Arizona Bill to Crack Down on Rioters Could Be Used to Shut Down Protests

Agree on both points. People who hinder and/or hurt others need to face some kind of punishment for their civil disobedience, but this is too extreme.while i think this is extreme, some kind of punishment needs to dealt out, like protesters in AZ who blocked roads and denied people their right to travel

I agree. However, this law is going to give law enforcement leeway to penalize folks for just being there.

Not sure I am completely comfortable with this news account. The Phoenix New Times is a weekly tabloid distributed for free. The way the story is written, and the headline placed on it, raises the possibility of Fake News or at least characterizing the situation more extremely than it exists.
Other news accounts I am reading are more objective and plausible.
But absolutely those who obstruct traffic and businesses, who loot, burn, destroy, vandalize, commit assault and battery, and terrorize innocent citizens and cost taypayers millions to clean up after them deserve serious criminal charges. One person doing that would be convicted and thrown in the slammer for quite awhile. Certainly those organizing and paying for the events are equally culpable.
In our tea party rallies here, nobody got paid for participating and the organizers were extremely strict. No hateful signs. Do not block traffic or businesses. Don't damage anything and don't litter--pick up after ourselves. We always left an area cleaner than we found it. Peaceful demonstrations and protests are not destructive or dangerous or threatening.
Those that are destructive and/or dangerous and/or threatening have no place in our society and the law should be given every resource to first, discourage them, and if they insist, deal with them severely.
those who support crushing protests should remember that their "side" won't always be in charge. observe how the nuclear option is going for the Democrats if you doubt that.
why should people be allowed to destroy other peoples private property?
you can protest all you want. you are not allowed to destroy other peoples things.
how about you lose you drivers license for a year if you engage in unlawful behavior while protesting.
I agree. However, this law is going to give law enforcement leeway to penalize folks for just being there.
A year, you dont even loose it for a year on a DUI lol. Some of you need a reality check.
guy, nothing is set in store here.
but if you wish to get technical
those AZ protesters blocked peoples RIGHT to travel, so they violated rights.
did you read the article?
answer : no, you didn't read the article.

And its worthy of a years suspension lol. Get real
dude, you really need to get in touch,
everyone has a right to travel, like a person has a right to free speech,
tell me, what do you do to a person who denied other people their rights?

so once again you can't address what was said.
notihng stops people from protesting. however it increase the punishment for people that want to
destroy private property
you evidently didn't read the article.

none of the bills have been passed and most are stuck in committee's probably never going to make it out.
again you have a right to protest not destroy someone else's property.
nor do you have the right to block road ways.
By including rioting in racketeering laws, it actually permits police to arrest those who are planning events. And [Republican Sen. John] Kavanagh, a former police officer, said if there are organized groups, "I should certainly hope that our law enforcement people have some undercover people there.''
"Wouldn't you rather stop a riot before it starts?'' Kavanagh asked colleagues during debate. "Do you really want to wait until people are injuring each other, throwing Molotov cocktails, picking up barricades and smashing them through businesses in downtown Phoenix?''
The Arizona Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that would allow the government to seize the property of people who help plan a demonstration that turns violent.
If the bill becomes law, prosecutors could charge people and seize assets for conspiracy to riot even if the so-called conspirators didn't participate in any violence.
