Are you wearing masks/gloves in public places? How many people do you see wearing masks in public?

It's been at least 2 weeks now since I've been wearing masks and disposable nitrile gloves whenever I go anywhere in public. Those public visits are limited to grocery stores, Walmart, Home Depot, and Rite Aid. I put on the mask and slip on a new pair of gloves when I reach the store. I remove everything once I leave the store and get back to my vehicle. I throw away the gloves immediately. When I return home, I thoroughly wash the used mask(s) in soapy water with light bleach. I rinse them, and hang them out to dry for the next day. I've already gone through 1 box of gloves, and had to procure a new box.

I was reading a post from a member here, who said that only 50% of people in his/her area are seen wearing masks. That struck me, because I haven't yet been anywhere that half the people there wearing masks! I'd estimate it's more like 15-20% of people here in northern Delaware wear masks in the 1 or 2 places I go each day.

→1). Do you wear masks when going to public places?
→2). Do you wear gloves?
→3). What percentage of people wear masks in your area?

Some but not too many, single digits is my impression, but then, I'm not going out very much.

When I return from a supply run, it is immediate strip in the laundry for the clothes, and straight to the showers for me (my wife is medically at risk, and she wont - I won't let her - go out - same for my Dad for whom I shop for).

Me? I still suffer from the illusion of indestructibility (and a strong immune system - eat enough dirt when I was a kid I guess).

If I am going to protect myself then it should be done right with a full MOPP 4 get up and having decontamination room set up before the entrance to my house slash vehicle storage area, with the ability to decontaminate the myself and the vehicle. This virus is not worth the effort and too damn ubiquitous to bother with less. I just wash my hands a bit more and more thoroughly. I also use a UV C wand and box to do decontamination if I think something warrants it. Otherwise I live my life like I used to.

Masks are more common than gloves. About the only people I see doing both are really chunky middle aged women. About half the people I saw today when I was out in stores were wearing their masks wrong so I am not sure how much protection they are really getting. They were wearing it to cover their mouths but not their noses.

It seems I'm forced to go out every week or two, and I always wear both a mask & gloves.

On the streets I see maybe 30% wearing masks. But in the grocery stores it's well over half, maybe as high as 75-80%. My state & city strongly recommend masks in public, but haven't mandated them yet. However quite a few of the surrounding suburbs have recently begun mandating them, with citations & fines for not wearing them.

Thread is kinda pointless if we dont know where you live.

But you'd know where I live if you actually read my original post. Its right there! Northern Delaware. But where I live has little to do with it, because the whole country is supposed to be social distancing, and masks were recommended for everyone when in public.

Only here can I start a thread asking a simple but relevant question, or make an important point, but someone won't understand the purpose of doing it. An analogy would be a history teacher teaching his students history, but 1 or 2 students ask "why are you teaching us history in history class"?

Are they cutting nose holes in their masks like Joe Biden did a few days ago(so they can still sniff the hair of complete strangers)?

Masks do not protect you, they protect people around you by shrinking the 6' contamination area.

Sure but when people sneeze their noses are kind of the corona cannon so it is a fail either way. (and masks do protect the wearer from their own dirty hands being placed on their face)

I do not wear gloves. It seems that wearing gloves is counter productive. In the grocery stores, it is rare to see someone without a mask.

Gloves no. But, I use napkins to pump gas and have alcohol wipes in the car for when I touch other things. I do wear a mask and safety goggles at the grocery store but not at work.

The only thing the mask does is slow the spread by limiting the distance people are contagious.

It wasnt directed at you. It was also a general comment since it happens in many other CV threads.

I'm always filling in your holes(LOL)

I saw his...It was the poster immediately after him that prompted my comment, which I thought would be helpful so early in the thread.

See...you look like an ass again. (LOL )

Agreed. Gloves work for medical personnel who change them (usually) for every patient.

But if grocery workers, shoppers, delivery people, etc are wearing them, they end up being the same as no gloves, since eventually they will touch their faces or an infected surface and still transmit it.

So I have hand sanitizer in my car and use it immediately and use it on steering wheel, etc if necessary.

The last time I was in a grocery story with other people, about a month ago (except for my Costco prescription run) I wore one glove. I used their sanitizer all over the cart handle and areas and then just used my gloved hand to take things from shelves, open cases, etc. Not sure that it was worth it but at least I've been thru the incubation period from then. I also didnt wear a mask then.

Yeah, some of those. A bunch of those stuff too.

Growing up, would have a big breakfast, and then I'd disappear outside for the day, out and about with my childhood friends, returning home for dinner.
(don't be late, kitchen closed, you'd not get any)

All seems kinda normal, and somehow rather distant from today's childhood realities.

Sounds like mine.

1. Yes
2. Started wearing disposable nitrile gloves long before I saw others starting to.
3. I can only respond to the areas I go to publicly, I would say the majority wear masks, far more than those who do not.

Today I ordered a shield with a special hat. The masks are stuffy thus hard to breathe correctly. The shield will open at the bottom = fresh air can be obtained. May as well make this ordeal as comfortable as possible.

Gloves are not sterile once they are exposed to immediate surroundings. Virus can likely linger on the material.
