Or are you merely a packrat?

Ohio judge sets up program to help hoarders

According to the article the good folk in Cincinnati are fed up with hoarders, and the city and county judge are requiring hoarders to seek psychiatric counseling.

I can understand that a person who hoards stuff in their homes to the point that just being in the home poses a health and/or safety hazard. These folk maybe should see someone who might be able to help rid them of their hoarding lifestyles.

That being said, is the average pack rat following the same mentally unstable path as a hoarder? Will pack rats become hoarders? Do you know any pack rats or hoarders? Do you live with a pack rat or hoarder?

I save any piece of design I think is cool. The result is that I have piles and piles of flyers, hand-outs, signs and cards. Like, way to many to do anything with.

I'm the opposite of a hoarder. I throw things out or give them away compulsively.
I value space more than just about anything that might fill it.

I am all about getting rid of stuff I don't need. I don't know how much stuff I have thrown to Goodwill or other places, but its substantial. Its bad enough both my parents and my wifes parents are hoarders, because I am going to have to sift through all the **** when they die.

Once, about ten years ago, a guy was stealing some stuff from a Goodwill donation drop-off center in the middle of the night.
He had just loaded a computer into his truck when a local news van pulled up.
They were doing a story about the recent epidemic of thefts from Goodwill drop-offs.
So the guy pretended he was there because he was dropping off the computer.
They interviewed him, and showed a brief segment of him on the news, saying how awful he thought it was.

(I can't vouch for the authenticity of this story, not having been there, but the guy swears up and down that it happened, just like that ).

When I was getting ready to move out of Wisconsin, one of the ladies in my college speech class gave me this website where it was kind of like a community swap. It was just a local thing, but it was basically people just giving away stuff for free like microwaves and small furniture and stuff like that. After we had a garage sale, we put a bunch of stuff up there we didn't want to take with us and we were able to get rid of everything. It was kind of a cool little thing. I don't make any money giving it to Goodwill, why not give it away to somebody for free?

There is a website (The Freecycle Network) which has county branches in most states now. You can post items that you no longer want, and others can then email you if they want to arrange to pick the items up. Pretty nifty...except that there seem to be more "wants" than "offers"...and some folks try to take advantage by asking for high-end valuable items.

I tend to store stuff in my closet and then forget about until several months later I decide to clean my closet out and find it. I cleaned out my closet yesterday and found $200, now Im trying to figure out why I stored $200 away.
