Finished it last night. It being rather slow, I'm glad I stuck with it. What a powerful message about the liberating power of doubt and the narrowness and rigidity of certainty.

I enjoyed it. Good actors and a plot that kept me interested.

Loved the surprise at the end.

Why did you feel the element of doubt was liberating?

I enjoyed it, and I've been telling family and friends who haven't yet that this would be a perfect time to catch it. A fine movie, stellar cast, insightful story, and all round great way to spend two hours.

The sermon on doubt covers it.

As Judge Learned Hand do the talking from a famous speech that I dearly love.

"The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the mind of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias; the spirit of liberty remembers that not even a sparrow falls to earth unheeded; the spirit of liberty is the spirit of Him who, near two thousand years ago, taught mankind that lesson it has never learned but never quite forgotten; that there may be a kingdom where the least shall be heard and considered side by side with the greatest."

And look at how certainty dictates right-wing views on transgenders and abortion.

The takeaway for me was the political positioning of the various Cardinal groups.

I can see why a liberal Cardinal would have a very difficult job getting elected.

Progress and change is measured in thousands of years.

Yeah, they don't all move slowly just because they're old. They're stultifyingly deliberative. Anyone moving fast is looked upon with suspicion. (Thinking of you DJT.)

I actually saw this movie twice. Once before the Academy Awards, as I like to watch as many nominees as I can before the awards as I like to root for my favorite, which this one was; and again after the Pope died. This should have been, IMHO, the 2025 Oscar winner. The plot was great: political intrigue, and the casting outstanding.

We really enjoyed it. The entire cast was great, but Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini especially stood out. And that twist at the end! I'm neither Catholic nor religious but the whole process was fascinating. Big Thumbs Up!
