Anti-war groups plan Washington rally - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON - Anti-war activists, unions and other national organizations promise a large protest rally Saturday against the Iraq war.

Groups say they have chartered hundreds of buses and expect thousands of people to descend on the National Mall for the demonstration west of the Capitol.

Organizers said Wednesday the protest is part of an effort that will include lobbying congressional offices next week and other rallies later across the country.

There previously have been two large demonstrations in New York City that rivaled Vietnam era protests in size. One was just before the invasion of Iraq in 2003; the other came on the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention.

On Saturday, organizers hope to focus attention on Iraq more intensely than ever, given the growing public opposition to the war and congressional efforts to repudiate it.

"We have more tools today" to organize large protests, said former Rep. Tom Andrews, a Maine Democrat and an organizer of the rally. "We have an Internet culture, a network that can put information in people's hands."...
 
As with any pro-war or anti-war rally; not many really will come as in the good old days because of WWW, tv, gaming, etc.. Busy "technological advanced" people.
 
I guess we can look for a lot of Communists and Socialists stirring the pot at that rally.......There will be a lot of burning of the American flag and gross obscene hate slogans against the presidents................Our military will be condemned as murderers and rapists.........Plenty of drugs and spaced out druggies.....................

Vietnam all over again...........

Really, what the hell does that mean?

I watched the last big anti war rally in the Peoples Republic of San Francisco on CSPAN and that is exactly how it was..........Sure there were a few pacifists there but they were few and far between.....

You should attend a support the troops rally sometime....All you see are people waving the Flag, singing patriotic songs and supporting the troops.......

It means that you can't classify people so easily. To indicate that all of the people at a rally such as that one would all fit into such a shallow stereotype is absurd. It comes off more like partisan hackery than anything else. Then again, it is probably far easier to judge something when you see it in very simplistic terms.

Your enthusiasm for voluntary failure against this Iranian, Syrian-sponsored terrorism in Iraq (that thing you people keep misrepresenting as a civil war) typifies the left's fixation on U.S. defeat.

Handing Iraq over to the kind of terrorists it use to sponsor in a post-9/11 world would be like handing a defeated Germany to Nazis after Pearl Harbor.

FDR had to deal with visionless Congressional peace-mongers and isolationists, as did nearly every Cold War president. These hysterical idiots will go down in history with those who told us the telephone would never be anything more than a kid's toy.

Waving U.S. flags, screaming U.S.A and thinking they're doing the troops a favour by putting a bumper sticker in the back of their 4x4s is how they want you to support the troops. Dont ever question the people that put them there in the first place for you will be called a communist. And if you dare to question the choices of our Leader Maximo Mr. Bush. You will be called out as a jealous and rabbid liberal.

Example :





HOW TO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS :

- Dont question why they're still there.
- Dont question the decisions of the people who put them there.
- Wave an American flag and scream U.S.A. at Monster Truck Rallies.
 

Well I watched the whole anti war rally and their were speeches by communists and socialists asking to free prisoners from our prisons, adopt a socialist system, etc.....Peeing on and burning the American Flag along with pictures hanging the President of the U.S. were high lights.......
 

So based on your viewing of that one anti-war rally you feel that you are justified in making such sweeping judgments?

Is it burning and peeing on American flags? Is it supporting Fidel Castrol and Hugo Chavez........Is it chanting death to the president..........Does the support the troops and their commander in Chief?

Well there were probably 100,000 people there, 99,000 Commies and Socialists and 1000 well meaning bu disillusioned pacifists.

Again, it is easy to make such judgments when they are based on shallow and poorly constructed stereotypes. Based on one anti-war rally you feel justified in making judgments about people. Meanwhile, I've actually been to a few anti-war rallys and have yet to see what you described above. Your judgments only lessen your credibility and make you come off as a partisan hack.

Yeah there was a anti-illegal immigration rally a few weeks ago in L.A. about 400 people showed up. I'm sure 399 of them were rabbid KKK members and 1 of them was a well meaning but disillusioned pacifist who wanted both sides to come up with some sort of agreement.

No. As a matter of fact I would not call any of those things that you cited as "Supporting the troops"....but in the same vein, I would not call Waving the flag, supporting Cheney and singing patriotic songs and chanting your admiration of the President as "Supporting the troops" either.

Supporting the troops to me means a couple of things:

1. Most importantly it means never asking our soldiers to go into a war and give their lives and limbs for a cause that does not involve an imminent or grave threat to our security. (This means more than Saddam might have weapons of mass destruction).
2. Second of importance, it means never asking them to remain in the middle of a civil war where neither side wants us to be there...attempting to clean-up a mess/chaos that was created. (Again, our Soldiers should not have to become maimed or die because GWB/Cheney/Rumsfiled made mistakes).
3. It means making sure that our leaders do not manipulate them and American fears by attempting to link their efforts to 911. (In other words, don't use propoganda against our own soldiers. Be honest).


Which is why I say that the ONLY way that you can support the troops is to say that it is time to tell them that we will not ask for any more of your blood or limbs to continue in this pointless effort. Bring them home to a heroes welcome and congratulate them for serving honorably and noblely.
 

This entire post is one giant straw man argument. Nobody is saying you can't question a war or its leaders, just that you can't lie through your teeth about this country every time it tries to defend itself without aiding the enemy.

Those are strictly your opinions...........How do you think the guys in Iraq feel when they see pictures of scum burning the flag and peeing on it? How did they react when your leader Kerry made those stupid comments about our troops in Iraq a month ago?

Bottom line a bunch of commies and socialists taking advantage of a anti war rally to promote their agenda helps no one and should be condemned by both the right and the left..........

Oh come on Champs the pictures have been posted on the net many times.......Its undenialable.........I watched the whole rally. It was prior to the beginning of the invasion of Afghanistan........
 

Whoa.....you are twisting my post to fit into your rant here.
If you read what I posted I said that I don't think any of those things are supporting the troops. However, if you want me to elaborate, I don't think that the majority of the people at a rally like this are engaging in that type of conduct.
Additionally, I don't know why you are trying to tie comments of Kerry to me or claim that he is my leader. If you have followed anything that I have written here you would know that Kerry was no where near my choice for the nomination in 2004 and I am very glad that he is not a candidate in 2008. Yes, I voted for Kerry in 2004 because there really was no other choice. I certainly wasn't going to vote for GWB....to me that would have been a vote for ignorance and incompetence. It wouldn't matter much anyway...because I live in California and there was no way that California would go for GWB anyways (we are far too intelligent here in the Golden State).
I think what Kerry said was stupid. Whether it was a joke gone awry or whether he meant to say it I think that it was a stupid comment.

But again.....Supporting the troops should mean more than singing patriotic songs and waving flags....and I stand by what I wrote that I believe supporting the troops means....and if you look....nowhere do I say peeing on and burning flags...
