This was not a stretch of the first amendment. An abuse, yes, not a stretch. Stretch tends to imply that the freedom does not cover such speech. It is inevitable that rights be abused if we are to remain a free country. It is part of the sad price of being free, that we have to put up with people like this, and what they say. The far more sad part is the loss of this soldier as part of the price of being free. I choose to believe he gave his life for that freedom.Navy Pride said:Just another stretch of the first amendment.........It happens all the time in this country...........That is the sad part............

"Members of the Rev. Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., are picketing military funerals, KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported Friday.

It's not really an abuse either, it's simply bad form, bad behavior and ultimately disgusting. However, as you so rightly wrote, it is the price we pay for freedom.Dezaad said:This was not a stretch of the first amendment. An abuse, yes, not a stretch. I don't condone the Iraqi invasion, but picketing a burial is the crassest thing to do. OK, when you read the site, they hate and rejoice for the death of everyone.. Londoners during 7/7, Americans during 911, etc.. Those guys are totally crazy.

js416256 said:So I did some research on their websites and the protesting of the funerals of the soldiers actually started because one of their churches was bombed, so they are saying that God is punishing our soldiers by killing them in Iraq. First of all that stance has no connection whatsoever to the war in Iraq because they are claiming that homosexuals bombed the church. I distinctly remember hundreds of African American churches being bombed in the 50's by people just like this and they are claiming that God is killing soldiers because some person died in this competely unrelated death. If we follow their logic should God not take veangance on these KKK-like groups for bombing so many African American churches (remind me to picket these people's funeral). Also their motives for protesting are really hypocritical and selfish, imagine how many bombings their have been in the past year but of course God will only seek revenge on this sole bombing because this church carries such a moral message. The death of one of these hate mongerers will of course be repaid in the blood of thousands, that makes so much sense.
