"Anti-abortion laws increase the likelihood that pregnant victims of domestic violence will be murdered by their abusive partner, according to a new study. The study, published Monday in a leading peer-reviewed health care journal Health Affairs, looked at data from 2014 to 2020 to analyze the link between anti-abortion laws and intimate partner violence before the Dobbs decision that repealed Roe v. Wade. The authors of the study were prompted to research this intersection because of one indisputable fact: Murder by an abusive partner is the leading cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S. ― outpacing medical issues like sepsis and hemorrhage.

For some victims of intimate partner violence, pregnancy can increase the severity of violence, while for others it can actually initiate abuse in a relationship that was not violent beforehand.

...Other research suggests that abortion access plays a critical role in reducing intimate partner violence. The Turnaway Study, landmark research published in 2020, found that abortion access can help reduce domestic violence because victims are able to choose whether they want to share a child with their abuser ― a link that lasts a lifetime and makes it harder to leave an abuser."

I think of that woman in TX whose ex-partner is suing her for leaving the state for an abortion. Imagine being stuck with him for life.

This dovetails with Republicans attacking no-fault divorce, which can also rescue women from abusive marraiges. To wit:

"...now they’ve set their sights on a new target: no-fault divorce. Leading the charge are Republican legislators in some of the worst states for women (looking at you, Louisiana!) and reactionary anti-feminist ranters like Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, and Steven Crowder. Fun story: Crowder went viral for portraying himself as a victim of no-fault divorce, expressing shock that his wife could divorce him without his permission even “in Texas”—shortly before a video emerged in which he berated his heavily pregnant wife for, among other domestic failings, not being “wife-worthy.”"

Opposition to both abortion and no-fault divorce are attacks on women. Christian Nationalism, with its focus on a patriarchal hierarchy, surely plays a role in this.

Not surprising. Anti-choice laws are designed to enshackle women against their will.

Not necessarily new, but hey if it's news, spread it. Previously posted:

Altho they dont break them out specifically in murder rates, they do state that by far, the most frequent cause of death for pregnant women is murder by the sperm donor.
And they also dont include murder in the statistics about deaths due to pregnancy/childbirth.
No. 1 Cause of Death in Pregnant Women: Murder
FROM THE WEBMD ARCHIVES
"Given all the risks associated with pregnancy, it's easy to imagine that expectant mothers are vulnerable to illnesses and even to death. But shocking new information shows that these women actually are more likely to be murdered than to die from any complications of pregnancy -- or from any other cause for that matter.

"We found that homicide was the leading cause of death among women who were pregnant ... and accounted for 20% of deaths among that group, compared with 6% of deaths among nonpregnant women of reproductive age," says author Isabelle Horon, DrPH"
There were 3.62 homicides per 100,000 live births among females who were pregnant or within 1 year postpartum, 16% higher than homicide prevalence among nonpregnant and nonpostpartum females of reproductive age (3.12 deaths/100,000 population, P<.05). Homicide during pregnancy or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy exceeded all the leading causes of maternal mortality by more than twofold. Pregnancy was associated with a significantly elevated homicide risk in the Black population and among girls and younger women (age 10–24 years) across racial and ethnic subgroups.

CONCLUSION:
Homicide is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period in the United States. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of elevated risk for homicide among all females of reproductive age.
"Laws restricting women’s access to reproductive care and abortion can place women at further risk, since control over a woman’s reproductive choices often plays a role in intimate partner violence, Lawn said in an October 20 U.S. News & World Report article. Lenient firearms legislation can also increase the risk."

So now consider...with so many more women unable to access abortions...that so many more men are going to be stuck with child support for 18 years...and many will be pretty pissed about it. How likely is it that 20% murder rate is going to go up?

Perhaps we could find some way to legislate male bodily autonomy and tie that to each states abortion access laws.

HIPAA didnt go away with Dobbs. Women still have/should have that protection.
HIPAA does not have anything to do with bodily autonomy.

I believe that HIPAA could be the undoing of some of these 'monitoring' ideas.

I predict that child abuse will also increase in those states that have very restrictive bans on abortion. It stands to reason that if more unwanted children are born into already stressed families the amount of abuse will increase with the stress. That will mean more children in foster care increasing the number of children to entering the fostercare pipeline to incarceration.

Did anyone think this through? The alternative to Republicans not thinking the banning of abortion through is that they are just so hateful they don't care if more children are abused or destined for jail.

A good argument for abortion and similar to such arguments I made myself in the past. Abortion bans or severe restrictions will only lead to back alley abortions or women taking other desperate measure. History has shown this and women suffered. But some seem intent on dragging us back into past.

Not anyi abortioinsts, thats for sure.

Not to mention making women suffer. Cruelty is goal and/or result of abortion restrictions.

It is all those people that are so happy to be forced to be parents...

Soon Child Abuse rates will rise as people forced to be parents show their kids how much they wanted them./..

Pure speculation here, but I suspect the homicides are more common among women who Try to use pregnancy to rope a man in than in those where it is in fact accidental and the woman is cooperating in trying to end the situation. If the woman says "Instead of child support, how about a road trip to a pro-choice state?", I would bet the risk goes Way down.

Wow, that is pure speculation based on pure misogyny.

Do men understand the birds and the bees? Do they contribute their sperm voluntarily or not? Can they protect themselves, or not?

Maybe there shouldnt be any barriers to abortions so she has to bargain? How does she get the man? All she'll get is 50% of child support $...and pay all the other $$ plus time and effort and loss of her independence, etc. What if they're married, plenty are. Did you really not think that thru, or do you really think that loads of women want that?

BTW, men have been killing inconveniently pregnant/childbearing women for millenia. Even their wives. It's nothing new.
