There are already great threats to democracy, most of all from the crisis in oligarchy and inequality, with the oligarchs' greatest enemy democracy, and the vulnerability to many voters to support fascism, but I see another one likely coming.
That is simply the power, in terms of military and wealth, seeing the sheer incompetence of people who can be elected to power from democracy, seeing no benefit and great danger to that system.
They see people like trump, Ron DeSants, Ted Cruz, Kirsti Nome, Josh Hawley, and many others, and have to think about the menace they pose in terms of bad foreign policy - 'hey fall in love with North Korea's dictator and Putin and end NATO' - and economics - I'm watching trump confronted today that his policies risk ending the dollar as the world reserve currency.
These powerful people aren't going to accept these harms IMO, and see no reason for allowing them, in addition to the issues mentioned above. It's cute and all talking about 'the people's right to self-rule', but it's a farce when so many of the candidates are so bad and the process of raising and spending billions has little to no merit or benefit.
I suspect it's mostly just about their figuring out how they want to change the system and how to do it, but that it's a growing likelihood. There are trillions of dollars at stake, and clowns are amateur hour with great risk. They don't have any respect for voters who respond to idiotic appeals like 'hate woke', I think.
They likely thought that the requirement for their money gave them enough say, but are seeing it doesn't. More and more countries don't allow democracy . Democracy is really a radical idea we take for granted, and it's precarious.
