The Santa Ana winds have returned. This time Pacific Palisades is burning. From 20 acres at 11:30 AM to 770+ at 2:30 PM. The worst winds are supposed to be late tonight, and early AM tomorrow,

In Venice I can see plumes of smoke from the fire, as can those living in Santa Monica and Marina del Rey. Smoke is being blown out over the ocean.

More sirens — have been hearing them frequently this afternoon.

Money well spent for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. An argument could be made for restricting new building in the suburban-chaparral interface — closing the barn door after most of the horses have left.

More strong gusts as the winds in Venice increase this afternoon.

No rain locally in yonks. The brush is dry, and abundant from last winter’s generous rains.

You don't want to be in the traffic jam when the fire comes through. Just saying.

Always be the first one to panic.
And the vehicles abandoned and blocking the evacuation routes — at least Palisades Lane — say that you are correct. Pacific Coast Highway is a mess as well — major traffic artery for those living west of Santa Monica. No one is traveling on PCH east of Topanga Canyon, and I don’t know how close to the Santa Monica boundary the westbound traffic is stopped.

This is why you should be the first person to grab what you need and get a hotel room a hundred miles away.

Update says LA County firefighters used a bulldozer to remove abandoned vehicles from Palisades Drive and Sunset Boulevard — Teslas and Mercedes included.

From above link.

Edited to add: 1,262 acres burned at 3:30 PM.

Source of fire identified.

Between PP and Malibu...when the rains come, it's gonna get ugly with mudslides and boulders rolling down the hills to Hwy 1.

Not being from the area a few years ago I got to experience the Santa Ana winds. It's not like ordinary winds, it's like statically charged. Very strange, at least to me.

I wrote a little bit about this newest wave of devastation in a different forum. I cannot even believe my own eyes as to what I am seeing on TV and across social media. Hasn't Santa Monica also been evacuated? So far, Venice seems safe. Please take care.

The worst of the winds, hurricane in force, 75 mph gusts have yet to come. This is catastrophic. Now I hear it's going into Brentwood. Homes, stores, a high school, embers traveling so quickly. I am so sorry. As you know I am in San Diego County. We expect our power will be cut either sometime later this evening or tomorrow. We are also under a red flag warning. So far, no fires. Keep us posted if you can, and God Bless. I pray you are safe.

Fox Cable is giving the most accurate information right now. Live coverage.

I’m also seeing live coverage from CBS via the Internet.

Santa Monica has ordered immediate evacuation north of San Vicente, and north of Montana to San Vicente. Sort of Brentwood adjacent.

Palisades High School is burning, as are nearby apartments on Sunset. Besides the high school, both sides of Temescal Canyon are on fire. My SIL said a nursing home was being evacuated. The Getty Villa had some landscaping damaged, but the buildings and art collections are unharmed. A long time seafood place on PCH west of Topanga Canyon Blvd burned, so the fire is traveling towards the Malibu city limit. This area was not affected by the Malibu Franklin fire.

Ohmigod, I am so sorry. Good luck to everyone involved.

(And thanks for the updates, @venice_ca, @trixare4kids, and @beefheart.

I'm seeing a lot of flights into Burbank being diverted to LAX and Long Beach.

Any idea why?

I’m maybe equidistant from the Palisades and LAX, and it’s really windy here tonight. I expect our local streets will be littered with palm fronds tomorrow.

Edited to add: Never mind — winds at Burbank airport are 71 mph v 32 mph at LAX.

Wind gusts from the east, unsafe to land.

Santa Ana winds are all too common in this area during this time of year like clockwork.
If you are residing in a red flag area, you don't have to wait to be told to evacuate especially since they are calling for 75 mph winds tonight. Pack your vehicles up now and get the heck out of Dodge.

The Palisades brush fire continues to spread west, and is now burning in eastern Malibu prompting evacuation orders from Topanga Canyon Blvd west to Las Flores Canyon. Homes on the beach side of Pacific Coast Highway are in flames along this stretch of Malibu. There are reports of several Palisades evacuees suffering from burns walking along PCH from Sunset Blvd to Duke’s at Las Flores. They were treated at a nearby fire station. Residential and commercial areas continue to burn in the Palisades east of Sunset Blvd and PCH.

The Eaton Fire above Altadena (San Gabriel Valley) is expanding and sending embers into residential areas a mile away — several houses burning there.

There’s also a fire a few miles away in eastern Pasadena (again San Gabriel Valley).

The Hurst Fire has erupted in Sylmar, in northeastern San Fernando Valley.

In short, a night from hell for firefighters and residents in the affected areas.

The Santa Ana winds are forecast to diminish Wednesday afternoon.
