By canceling military pact with the US, Duterte, who has murdered and unlawfully jailed thousands in their drug wars, signaled that he was willing to sacrifice the country’s most crucial strategic alliance in order to protect himself and his allies from accountability for the killings.

Duterte had banned three U.S. senators — Democrats Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts and Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont — from visiting the Philippines after they called for the release of a Philippine lawmaker who was jailed after she spoke out against extrajudicial killings in the drug war.

This isn't about Trump. Its about the US holding them accountable for the mass killings.

I don't think this is necessarily a reaction to Trump. Duterte & Trump are very much of like minds, in many ways. I believe this is strongly geographically & economically related to China's rise an economic & military power in Duterte's back yard. Let's not also forget that there are many Chinese in the Philippines, often active in trade, development, and business. Just as in America Jews are often associated with business, the same can be said of the Chinese by the Filipinos.

In terms of strategic "economic" importance, India is way more important than the Philippines.

Really? The third largest nation on Earth (soon to be the largest) and that has a highly professional military with a nuclear arsenal is "miles behind the Philippines"?

They know who is going to be running the region for the foreseeable future. Japan and South Korea never will, both have log history of conflict with China.

People of the world used to fear the USA and wanted it as their ally as it was seen as the strongest country in the world lead by strong and powerful leaders. Now they see us as weak and lead by a very weak leader and are no long afraid to leave us in the dirt for other countries they see as strong. It will not be the last country to do so.

Yeah, Duterte was making noise about this before Trump was elected. This is a lot more about Duterte than any POTUS.

If anything, I'm a bit surprised that Trump's usual "sucking up to the violent sociopathic autocrat" routine had so little effect. Duterte certainly wasn't responding well to criticism.
