Are children not being educated while they are being cared for?
Why don't you tell me?
I'm making the argument that the education system has morphed into nothing more than a babysitting service. The first 20 or support posts that.
If that is what the parents want...it is what they will get
Can't argue with that. That doesn't change the fact that the primary purpose of the public education system is no longer education.
Basically the current model. But I dont mind experiments in education.....if the parents approve. They will never approve only online school

Opinion noted.
It's not fine with me.
They who?
When was the last time you were in an elementary school?
Vote accordingly
A diversion. I don't do diversions.
Who knew Fox News was liberal.
LMAO.... Based on what I have seen among parents in just a few days where I live, I suspect year round school is a more likely scenario....
You obviously aren't a parent... Or a working parent.
What I have seen is that in times like this, our grocery and pharmacy staff are seen as essential. I wonder if this crisis will give them the recognition they deserve and a living wage...

I remember the push for technology in schools quite well... Like most things, it was overhyped but ultimately technology has found a place in classrooms as demonstrated by the rapid speed with which many school districts have moved to online learning during this time. Everyone acknowledges that it is not the level of education we all want but it is better than simply closing the schools and providing no education at all.

Teachers are still needed to create lesson plans, modify lesson plans, hold parent-teacher meetings, coach sports, sponsor clubs, tutor, directly teach students with special needs, etc.
If online classes were educator killers then professors would already be out of a job.
Teachers are still needed to create lesson plans,
I strongly doubt it. I homeschooled my daughter for a year. It was work.
Yeah maybe. I'd be open to the idea.
But that would mean SOMEONE needs to be home watching the kids and making sure they are actually listening to the online stuff. That would mean no more dual-income households. And good luck keeping that 6 year old sitting down listening to a computer for too long, no matter how entertaining you try to make it. Max attention span: maybe an hour all day at best.
But yeah, let's give it a whirl. It would be interesting.

Most like the idea of public schools serving as "free" daycare. The online version does not offer that service or "free" meals.
Not all schools have the infrastructure to operate as an online school, then there are students who lack access to a computer or internet service.
Working parents need the babysitter. But, other than that, there is no need for in-class schools, IMO.
There has never been anything wrong with homeschooling, and I know a handful of folk who do homeschool their kids. I think, however, a lot of it isn't just that one "may not need teachers/schooling..." thing. But rather under normal circumstances, a household must be two-income these days to really survive and that makes things like homeschooling rather difficult.

I will also say that we are also in a grand experiment period with special education services in this crisis. I think a lot of people are willing to give some leeway with schools in trying to figure this out (because this is something that hasn't been experienced since the early 20th century), but it's not limitless leeway. States still have requirements to meet for this historically discriminated population.

Go figure a Trumper who is anti school......
